YOU GUYS.

You are TOO MUCH.

I arrived for dinner with Alanna last night and noticed she was carrying a box. She said she was making a delivery for someone. I was confused at first and thought she knew someone who worked at the Huey's (because I can be extremely dense about these things). LOL. But it was a birthday box for ME!!! From YOU!!! I loved everything - the cards, the fun presents, the snacks, the McAlister's Deli Dollars!!!, even the box itself. I loved how well many of the items represented the givers. I was thrilled, but I was so nervous about not losing anything that I didn't even see the Amazon giftcard until I got home and went through the box again. :D :D :D I was/am so overwhelmed.

THANK YOU to [livejournal.com profile] aftondays, [livejournal.com profile] augustine, [livejournal.com profile] borboletalanna, [livejournal.com profile] canticles and [livejournal.com profile] fettman, [livejournal.com profile] danialand, [livejournal.com profile] dantheman23, [livejournal.com profile] glori, [livejournal.com profile] hestergray, [livejournal.com profile] kellchecker, [livejournal.com profile] kiwiria, [livejournal.com profile] lajea, [livejournal.com profile] mandajanie, [livejournal.com profile] mattiescottage, [livejournal.com profile] my_everafter, [livejournal.com profile] victoriaeremita, and MOST of all [livejournal.com profile] moredetails, who put this together and has been such a wonderful friend to me for the past 7 years. (I think that's everyone - please speak up if I missed you!) You guys are too good to me and made me feel very loved and special! Thank you SO much. :) I love you all.

(Sorry I didn't post about this last night - I meant to, but Evan turned the computer off while I was in the shower, and then I decided it was pretty late to get a post together anyway. But I will have pictures eventually! Alanna has better ones, though, I think.)

ETA: It's not even my birthday until Sunday! :)

I hate to sound like a broken record, but the weather here is just unreal. It's almost chilly outside and I love it! This is the least hot August I can ever remember. Everyone is speculating about what this will mean for our winter. I hope it just means that we'll have a long fall. :) All you Florida residents are on my mind today with the hurricane. I can't believe it's been upgraded to a 4. The organization around the eye is pretty impressive, though.

Well, last night I got a big surprise. Ryan had told me he was coming over because he had something for Evan and I...a birthday/early wedding present. He showed up at the back door with a new TV!!! Since Kathy left, I've been using a small castoff TV of my family's that has horrible reception. We've only been getting two channels- and that's with one of those signal enhancers. Ryan said he was tired of hearing me complain about it (which I really only did when he was there and wanted to watch something), so he fixed the problem. :) It's a 27-inch TV with a flattish screen and three A/V inputs, so we can watch DVDs again! The picture quality is awesome, and once my stereo works again, we can hook it up and it'll be like a home theater. I was so excited and surprised. It's unlike Ryan to give presents, let alone such a big present, so it's a happy sign that he's thinking of me in a more familial way. There's no one I'd rather have for a brother-in-law. I am very blessed.

So my birthday weekend is upon me. Monday is my actual birthday and I'm taking it off of work, but the weekend will be full of fun activities. Tonight we're watching the opening ceremonies with Debs and Ryan; tomorrow night we're going to a Derek Webb concert (which means I won't be at [livejournal.com profile] rawee1's bachelorette party - sorry, Robin! :(); Sunday night we're going to the Elvis Candlelight Vigil to wacko-watch; and Monday will be full of meals out and other fun things. Also, going to the DMV, since my license renewal-by-mail form has mysteriously disappeared. :P Going to the Vigil was my mom's idea. She thinks we ought to do something memorable for my 25th, and despite living in Elvis's hometown and being born on his death-day, I've never been to the Vigil. It ought to be hilarious. Don't worry, I'll take pictures. :D

Finally: What impressions do you get from me? And is there anything you associate with me?Whoever answers the above random questions will receive in return my own impressions and associations regarding them (if I haven't done so already!).

Kathy is awesome. When I went home for lunch, she was just leaving (she still has a key). After we talked for a minute, I went to my room, and all the laundry was sitting at the foot of my bed, washed and folded. On the top of the pile was a sign that said, "Courtesy of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man." :D

I keep forgetting to thank people for the cool, unexpected mail I've been getting lately. tingilyaDanielle, dakodaSharon, and apestaartjeSarah have sent Happy Engagement cards (Sarah's was in Flemish- how cool is that?), and almareaKimma sent a cute card and a mix CD. Thanks, guys! :) The CD is really catchy. Even though I hadn't heard most of the songs before, I already find them sticking in my head.

Now that I don't have to do laundry tonight, I'm freeeeeeeeee! Imagine that!

Imagine my surprise yesterday when I came home, after a crummy Monday, to find a package from [livejournal.com profile] apestaartje with Belgian chocolate inside! There was coconut chocolate and peanut-butter chocolate, and a cool card with a picture of an elephant getting on a bus. Sarah, you're awesome! Thanks! :D

Based on the results of a recent study, Memphis has the second-highest crime rate in the country - beaten only by Miami. Isn't it ironic, don't you think? I heard about it on the news.

My hair is getting entirely too long. It hasn't been this long since I first chopped it off in 1999. It looks better than when it was too short, but it's kind of a pain to take care of now. Evan likes it, though. What is it with men preferring long hair? Is it more romantic-looking or something? Anyway, I might take a couple of inches off of it next time, for my own sanity.

About an hour ago I went to the breakroom to get more tea, and there was a sandwich in the fridge. It was in a plastic box and had one of those fancy toothpicks in it. The stuff on top of the toothpick looked like a spider when I glanced at it. I almost had a heart attack.

In a little while I have to go to the dentist. It's a new dentist, and I haven't had a checkup in over a year, so I'm really not looking forward to it. People with normal-sized mouths must have it so easy at the dentist. I always have to endure shocked reactions when I cannot, in fact, open my mouth any wider. Those X-rays are a nightmare, too. Oh, I'll be glad when this is over.

Yay for Friday! I have a lot of fun plans for the weekend- with different friend groups. Quality catch-up time is coming my way. :) It's my last three-day weekend until Memorial Day, so I need to enjoy it. What are all of you doing?

The other day I found a burned CD with no label and had no idea what it was. It turned out to be my 1991 soundtrack, the last one I burned before I stopped downloading. It takes me right back to sixth grade. Speaking of CDs, I just mailed a batch. The shipping was cheaper than I expected! I still need some addresses- Messa? Kimma? DeAnna? Beth?

I've done so well with the eating this week, and today I'm blowing it right and left. I had a sample of strawberry smoothie this morning, and a small piece of cake just now because it was our monthly birthday party. Tonight I want to make a special dinner for Evan, which needs to include a dessert if he's going to be extra happy. Well...there's always tomorrow. :P I'm starting to believe that sugar really is addictive. Since I've been abstaining, I don't crave it so much. But as soon as I eat one M&M, I'm doomed. It's weird.

I don't think I've mentioned that my annual work conference is coming up- the one that was in Vegas last year. This year it's in New Orleans again. Because, you know, I haven't already been there fifteen times. The good news is, it's only three days, and this morning our senior VP sent us luggage! One carry-on suitcase and two smaller totes for each of us. Our names are already printed on the tags. It was a nice surprise. I like that guy. :) Now I'm reading up on packing techniques so I can use the new suitcase instead of my usual huge one.

Last night I got an idea and wrote something. It was only two paragraphs. Still, it was something. :)

I like candles. I feel compelled to share that for some reason.

My thoughts are with the Northeasterners. Please try to stay warm, guys! I asked Evan if he had called his parents in New Hampshire and he was like, "Why? They're fine." Then I heard that the wind chill in NH was -100 this morning. Yes, two zeros. I don't know how you guys can handle this. If it was ever -100 here, I'm positive that my heater would explode.

I guess I should update, huh? I've been typing so much today, I'm about to get carpal tunnel syndrome. Ouch.

Do you guys have corn mazes in your towns? There's a big one at the Agricenter and I want to go to it. My brother went last week and had a blast. Maybe I can get a group together this weekend.

Our living room TV is slowly dying. Kathy's had it since our freshman year, and the picture is getting steadily worse. I had mentioned to Evan that we needed a new one but didn't want to spend the money. Last night he showed up at the apartment with another TV! It was one that he'd had in storage from his old apartment, and he brought it all the way over to surprise me. :) He's the most thoughtful boyfriend in the world. Unfortunately, it wasn't much better than our current TV, and it's too big for the entertainment center. So he took it back. But I was so touched that he would think of that. :)

Last night as I was listening to Room for Squares I realized that I live my life defensively, not offensively. It seems like my life mainly consists of stuff happening to me and me reacting to it. I don't really go out and make my life. Does that make sense? I mean, I've done lots of fun and good things this year, but I don't feel like I've grown much. I haven't been Pondering or making Life-Altering Decisions or Seizing the Day. I haven't changed careers or moved to an unfamiliar place. Maybe I'm not in that season of life anymore. Lately I feel more settled. Is that necessarily bad? It's something to think about, anyway.

Hola.

Photoshop question: I've tried to make an icon for, like, the last three nights, and for some reason the text will not show up. I put in the text box like I'm supposed to, and change the font color and size, but letters won't show up. Numbers and symbols will. I don't get it. I guess I could make an icon that says "437&.{}." I love the new computer, but I haven't spent much time with it. I already feel like a zombie after 8 hours on the computer at work; going home to another one seems like a sad misuse of my time.

I had a sad, bad dream last night in which Bun died and then (I kid you not) turned into a Starburst. Then he turned back into Bun again and it turned out he hadn't died at all, just undergone some weird healing metamorphosis. I must need therapy. I've been worried about Bun because he briefly stopped drinking (Lawson's response: "Glad to hear he's back on the wagon"), but now he's acting normal again. I am so glad.

I never mentioned what Kathy got me for my birthday. Danielle, remember that Clay 8x10 she bought at the concert? Well, when we got home, she made me go into the living room, and after a few minutes she brought me a big bag of scrapbook stuff she had bought specifically for scrapbooking the concert. The colors matched the shirt I was wearing. It was so neat and thoughtful. Then she handed me the Clay picture and said "This is yours." I was like, "No, it's yours!" and she said, "No, I bought it for the scrapbook!" I was so happy. Isn't she great? :) Also, Daniel got me a George Foreman grill! I was speechless. Maybe he wants to compensate for taking my cook away from me. LOL. Anyway, it was incredibly nice of him. Every so often he does something really nice for me, and then I feel like a huge jerk for being so huffy most of the time. One of these times it'll stick.

I changed my journal colors. I suspect they will change semi-often until I find something I really like.

You guys are awesome. I came in today expecting a pretty typical day, and then I saw my Birthday Snap Cup. I can't tell you how happy that made me! I'm so touched. Thank you all so much! You are wonderful and you're blessings to me in your own unique ways. I am so happy to know you all and I hope someday I can be as great as you guys think I am. :) My cup runneth over.

To add to the excitement, I also got cool postcards yesterday from Jonathan and Jenn! Two postcards in one day! I mean, when does that ever happen? Thanks, guys. :)

Tonight we're having a big Build Brenda's Computer night at my parents' house. The guys are coming over to help my dad and his techie friend, and we're going to order pizza. It's going to be a fun, relaxing time. I'm looking forward to it. We have decided to give my old computer to my grandmother; my parents just gave their old computer to her, but she's having trouble with it, so maybe mine will be more straightforward.

I am very glad to hear that our Northeasterners are okay. What a crazy situation. My dad is angry and refuses to watch the coverage. "Did their cities get destroyed? Did they have people dying and power lines down all over the place? No! They just lost power!" He has a point. This morning I watched Katie Couric interview a power company official, asking, "So do you think the power will come back on today?" I hope all the other Memphians watching got as big a laugh out of that as I did.

Fun surprises today! Lawson gave me an early birthday present at lunch- a whole box of Homestar Runner action figures, and a keychain, and several window clings (including a Strong Bad one, which is already displayed in my car)! I also got a present from Jessica: McAlister's gift certificates! How awesome is that? One of them even says "Tea Bill" on it with a photo of tea. Woo hoo! Thanks, guys! You're great. :D

Debs came over last night and we watched Ever After, which is one of the movies I never get tired of. She also brought some ice for me! I'm making her some personalized magnetic poetry words as a going-off-to-college present. I also wanted to make marble magnets, but when I looked for my bag of marble magnet supplies, I couldn't find it anywhere. Our shared closets are Bermuda Triangles of craft stuff. Organization is needed. Unfortunately, organizational boxes and shelves get expensive. Oh well...I can mail some magnets later.

Something is wrong with our office PA system today. Every half hour or so, it broadcasts someone's voicemail menu. It's hilarious. I feel so sorry for this guy who has "TWO NEW MESSAGES," whoever he is.

As a disclaimer to yesterday's entry, no one is currently trying to fix me up, but thanks for your thoughts. In related news, I am so sick of wedding planning that I am contemplating wearing headphones around the apartment to tune it all out. If my time ever comes, I might just elope to save my loved ones the aggravation. :P

I feel very Broadway today. There's something theatrical about my outfit, though I'm not sure what it is...maybe the shoes. I felt compelled to sing and fake-tap-dance around the apartment this morning. I also decided that this song ought to be in a musical. Sarah Harmer rocks.

I had a very refreshing evening yesterday. I went to Harbor Town to water Nina's plants, and then spent over an hour at a park next to the Mississippi River. You can go right down to the river there. You could even go in the river, if you were crazy. I sat on some rocks and read psalms and looked at the water, and felt great by the time I left. I think if I went to that park more often, I would feel less homesick for the ocean. After that, I went to the new Summer Study at the Ugly Mug. It was packed. I felt like I was at an RUF reunion...there were people I hadn't seen in about six months. It made me so happy to see everyone together again, and to hear good teaching, and especially to sing with everyone. I've missed that so much. I love being a child of God, and I love being Presbyterian. I can't imagine being anything else. :)

As if all that weren't enough, I got a surprise package from Kathy full of Miami Dolphins merchandise. My Dolphins tumbler broke months ago, and I was really sad about it, so Kathy went to buy me a new glass and found a bunch of other stuff. I love my new glass. It has the Dolphins logo in the bottom. I thought it would also be fun to have a glass with Dan Marino's head in the bottom, so he could watch you drink. We decided this would be a good item for beer mugs, so Dan could cheer on the chugging at frat parties. LOL.

I talked with my dad about the job and I feel much better. I'm probably going to go for it.
