chestnutcurls: (me and bun)
I am going to start volunteering once a week at Streets Ministries! I spoke with a really nice lady this morning and we set everything up. I'm a little nervous, but I'm glad about this. I have wanted to serve for a long time, and this will be good for me. Jenn, maybe you could give me some inner-city ministry tips. :)

Today's high is 63! The low tonight is in the 40s! Tomorrow the heat will return, but for now it's beautiful and I am going to take a walk when I get home. Some of you have expressed interest in Memphis weather patterns, so here's a timeline of Memphis weather every year:

FALL: Fall in Memphis does not really begin until the middle of October. Leaves continue to fall well into November. What the rest of the country calls "Indian summer" usually occurs on or around Thanksgiving weekend. After that, the temperature plummets.

WINTER: The Christmas season usually brings the coldest weather of the year, often accompanied by ice storms which make it difficult to go Christmas shopping or visit friends and relatives. (Native Memphians lose their few driving skills at the sight of ice.) The middle of January brings unexplainable 60-degree temperatures. Just as people start to enjoy this, cold weather returns and sticks around, seemingly forever. In a good year, a "big snow" (3 or even 4 inches) falls in early February or March.

SPRING: Unfortunately, "spring" is a concept in Memphis rather than an actual season. Two or three glorious weeks of springlike weather occur in late April-early May. Then, suddenly, the temperature skyrockets to the high 90s.

SUMMER: This is best illustrated by the following poem which Kathy and I wrote several years ago:

"Summer in Memphis"

In the hot, frickin' sun,
We burn, and die.

This has been your glimpse into Memphis climatology. :)

I just got a cute, colorful notecard from Jessica! At my work, no less! Thank you, Jess. That totally brightened my day. And the flowers on the envelope are very pretty. :)
