me encantan mi gato y mi conejo
Nov. 20th, 2002 02:11 pmEveryone is so quiet today! What gives?
I think I have mentioned before that my sister and I often talk to each other in Spanish. It's good for both of us because it improves her skills for class, and helps me to retain what I already know. It's really starting to affect me. I'm thinking in Spanish again, which hasn't happened since high school. This is neat, but also annoying because Spanish phrases keep popping out of my mouth. The other day, when agreeing with something someone said, I nearly said "Yo tambien." :)
This made me think about languages in general. I love languages. When I was in high school, I thought about becoming a translator and working at Disney World or something. :) However, I am far better at reading/writing another language than speaking it, so that idea died quickly. And Spanish is the only foreign language I know well. I can understand some French (thanks to ballet, and a freak of nature that occurred while living with a French family for a week), but I can't respond. In German I know Danke and Bitte, and that's all. (Someone once said, "German is just an excuse to spit." :)) I am very impressed with Europeans (such as the very cool
apestaartje); most of them are fluent in three or four languages. I think we Americans are really lacking in that department.
I would like to really learn French, and other languages if I can. Just because. But it doesn't seem to work with just me and a book. I need to audit a class or something. Also, I would love to learn Elvish, but I can't justify doing it since it has never been spoken in the Real World. :)
I'm not sure why I brought this up. Does anyone else have any multilingual ambitions? Talk amongst yourselves. :P
