May Book List
May. 31st, 2005 04:19 pmThe Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
A selection from
Lauren's list last month. It's about a man who dies and then encounters the five people who changed his life. A quick, interesting read.
Girls in Pants: The Third Summer of the Sisterhood by Ann Brashares
What can I say? It's a Pants book, and a satisfying conclusion. I loved it. Neither of the sequels have been quite as good as the original, though.
Miss Wyoming by Douglas Coupland
This was the first Douglas Coupland book I have read. I was actually looking for Girlfriend in a Coma, but found this instead. It's about an actress/pageant winner and a washed-up producer type and the people each of them encounter while trying to escape from their lives. I can't widely recommend it because of all the depravity, but the plot was interesting and touching, and Coupland has some serious wordplay skills.
Bad Girls of the Bible by Liz Curtis Higgs
Why did I wait so long to read this one? I loved it. Each chapter is about a different Bad Girl (Rahab, Eve, Potiphar's wife, etc.) and opens with a fictional adaptation of her story, then gets into the Biblical details. Good stuff.
The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Down by Neta Jackson
This is the third in the Yada Yada series. I don't have much to say about it, except that I really liked it.
The Children of Men by P.D. James
A sci-fi mystery set 25 years after the entire human race suddenly and inexplicably becomes infertile. The narrator is an Oxford professor and cousin to the dictator of England. Verrrrry interesting. I'd like to discuss it if anyone else here has read it.
The Warrior by Francine Rivers
The second book in her new series about men of the Old Testament - this one is about Caleb. I just finished it last night. Again, not much to say except that you can't go wrong with Francine Rivers.
Long Shadows by Katherine Rowland (aka
krikketgirl)
I couldn't take the suspense anymore, so I finally ordered Katherine's first book. Now I want the second one. :) You can find a good synopsis here. I felt so sorry for the characters as they went through all their inner turmoil.
The Ersatz Elevator, The Austere Academy, and The Miserable Mill by Lemony Snicket
Lawson warned me that some of these were really ridiculous - and they were, so much so that I almost gave up on the whole thing. But now I have to know what V.F.D. means.
