May Book List
May. 31st, 2006 10:01 amPS, I Love You by Cecelia Ahern
A novel recommended by
hestergray. It's about a woman who loses her husband to cancer, then discovers that he's written her a letter for each month in the year after his death. Each letter contains some sort of surprise or instructions meant to help her recover. This book isn't Great Literature, but it's touching, sweet and even funny. It also didn't end the way I expected, which means it gets extra points. :)
The History of Love by Nicole Krauss
This is a complicated novel with three voices/storylines, all revolving around a fictional book called The History of Love. One is an old man who narrowly escaped the Holocaust, one is a young girl who was named after the main character of the book, and one is a biography-like story of the author of the book. I didn't see how on earth it would all tie together, but it did, and it's fantastically written.
The Story Girl by L.M. Montgomery *
I've read this before - several times - but I hadn't looked at it in a while. It's about the adventures of a group of cousins, led by a fourteen-year-old girl who has a knack for telling stories. More entertaining than it sounds.
A College of Magics by Caroline Stevermer
This book is a weird mixture of Harry Potter, Wheel of Time, and Jane Austen. It's about a duchess named Faris who is sent to a magical women's college, where magic is not actually taught. It's somehow activated, or absorbed, by the students via a process that is never really explained. After a disturbing magical accident in her senior year, Faris is sent away from the school. She discovers that she has inherited a huge magical responsibility, but before she takes it on, she wants to take back her throne from her conniving duke uncle. Yeah...it's complicated. But despite the gaping plot holes (and there are many), I really enjoyed it. And there's a sequel.
I also read an entire stack of Baby-Sitters Club Friends Forever books. Laugh at me if you will, but I was a huge fan as a kid and I never knew how the series ended. So now I'm finding out. I won't count them toward my book totals, though.
