August Book List
Aug. 31st, 2006 10:20 amI'm doing this today, because I might forget it tomorrow.
The Robber Bride* by Margaret Atwood
This is one of my all-time favorite books. It's about three friends who met in college and reconnected later, after all of their lives were destroyed by a beautiful, conniving, evil woman named Zenia. At the beginning, they're having lunch together when Zenia, who supposedly died years earlier, walks into the restaurant. The rest of the book is split into three flashbacks of how each of them were ruined by Zenia, and ends with how they deal with her reappearance. It's a fantastic story with great characters. Love it.
The Dubious Hills by Pamela Dean
I became interested in Pamela Dean after
katharhino pointed me to claims that the Draco Trilogy (my favorite HP fanfic) was partly lifted from her books. This was the only book of hers that the main library had. It's about a town that's under a spell, causing its residents to be limited to one field of experience each. Arry is the Physici, meaning she experiences pain for everyone in the town. ! When the Gnosi (teacher) of the town starts acting strange, Arry and her siblings are drawn into a conspiracy that may explain what happened to their parents, who have mysteriously disappeared. I liked it.
Bridget Jones' Diary* and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason by Helen Fielding
I'd never read the Bridget Jones sequel before, and it seemed like a good time to do so. I enjoyed both books...you can't beat the original of the chick lit genre. :)
Heaven: Your Real Home* by Joni Eareckson Tada
This is all about what heaven will be like, based on the Bible (of course) and supported by commentary and hymn quotes. It's something all Christians should read.
The Song Reader by Lisa Tucker
A novel about a young woman who helps people by "reading" the songs in their heads, believing that music can tell people things they don't even want to tell themselves. But one day her song reading backfires, with serious consequences. It's told from the perspective of her much-younger sister, who is being raised by her. Very interesting.
Dreaming in Technicolor by Laura Jensen Walker
The sequel to Dreaming in Black and White. In this one, movie-lover Phoebe goes to England with a friend, hoping to reclaim the British guy she had been dating, and learns a lot along the way. Fun and thoughtful.
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
One of my birthday book purchases! A sci-fi novel about Tally, who is only weeks away from her sixteenth birthday and the ritual surgery in which everyone is made pretty. But then she meets Shay, another ugly who tells her about another society where people are free and no one has the operation. When Shay deserts the city and leaves Tally directions, the government forces Tally to infiltrate the rebel society...or she'll never become pretty. It's an awesome book. I'm reading the sequel now.
Total books for August: 8
2006 year to date: 58
