Tonight I'm anticipating a fun time at my parents' house. I'm helping Debra cook for the shower, and Ryan's coming to keep us company and eat most of our efforts. We will also watch the debate and play Presidential Debate Bingo. Speaking of politics, I wanted to share an article that Kimma sent me. It's long, but well worth the read: Deterrence.

Last night I finished The Last Sin Eater by Francine Rivers. It was unusual and a little unbelievable, but good. That's the last of the books I borrowed from Evan's mom. Now I need to get back to Pride & Prejudice, which I dropped as soon as I got those other books. Kathy told me I wasn't allowed to read anything else until I had finished P & P, so she can't find out about this. :) There are a couple of other "Christian living" books I started but can't finish. With a few exceptions, I get bored or frustrated easily with contemporary Christian non-fiction. If it's not C.S. Lewis or R.C. Sproul or someone similar, it doesn't really hold my interest. I'm sure that makes me unspiritual. :P I tried to read an Elizabeth George book, one of Evan's mom's, and I wanted to throw it across the room because her tone was so relentlessly perky. Also, several of her illustrations drove me nuts. One was about a girl who visited her house and turned down some cherries offered to her because she'd already eaten. The writer said she was so convicted by this because if she had eaten at the Right Time, she wouldn't be eating cherries either. It was about self-control, but if I'm supposed to be so self-controlled that CHERRIES become evil and indulgent, forget it. It's not like it was a triple chocolate cake.

And now, because it's Friday....

The Last Sin Eater wasn't one of my favorite Francine Rivers' books, but it was okay. I lovelovelove the Mark of the Lion trilogy.

Presidential Debate bingo sounds fun. :)

Yeah, I think that's the only series of hers I haven't read now. I've been working on it. I only have one more in the women of the Bible series, and I also read The Scarlet Thread and something else I can't remember. She's very good.

Yeah, it's her, but she hasn't posted. I saw she added me one day, and the email address was the same.

I've read The Last Sin Eater; I liked it.

Cherries are good for you! I guess I understand the philosophy--curb unhealthy desires by keeping yourself satisfied in other things--but it's hard for me to imagine cherries being sinful in that situation. At some point things stop becoming about self-control and start sliding into legalism.

Does the last sin eater have anything to do with that Heath Ledger movie?

The Atonement Child! I loved that book. I got really into it so I was fuming in parts of it and crying in other parts.:-P

The cherries illustration made me laugh my head off. That would annoy me, too. I must be callous because I don't think I could be convicted by someone turning down cherries. Cherries are good--I would feel sorry for the person who turned them down because they couldn't be enjoying God's gift of cherries like I would be.;-)

It's brilliant! I love it too. That and the two first books of the "Mark of the Lion" trilogy are my favourite books by her. I was somehow non-impressed by "Redeeming Love".

I'm so glad that you enjoyed the article! I thought it was extremely well-written and right to the point. :-) I wish everyone would read it. *hugs*

Hope you're having a fun weekend, girlie!

What you said about Elizabeth George made me laugh. I've read one of her books, but if you asked me what it was called - or what it was about - I really couldn't say. Sadly, that's how impacted I was. LOL! I'm sure she ministers to other women, but I just didn't find myself particularly touched. ;-)

How to Have a Mary Heart in a Martha World, on the other hand....WOW. Thank you so much again for recommending that one. It really spoke to me. I'm currently reading a fabulous book called twentysomething by Margaret Feinberg. I highly recommend it! She's quickly become one of my favourite authors. I see she has other books, which I'm anxious to check out. :-)

Did you read Girl Meets God?

i don't think being selective about what you read as far as Christian writings doesn't make you unspiritual at all. i'm the same way.

No, I haven't yet, because of course the library here doesn't have it. One of my friends does, though, so I need to borrow it from her.

The Order. It deals with Sin Eaters, and the movie was actually called "The Sin Eater" in Australia and Singapore. It's a pretty good movie actually... worth renting.

Absolutely! :-) Thank you, again. *hugs* It's definitely one of those books that I've been recommending to others, too. :-)

Oooh - I do hope you'll enjoy Girl Meets God. It's truly fabulous. Mudhouse Sabbath (also written by Lauren Winner) is also excellent.

I'm currently engrossed in A Voice In the Wind by Francine Rivers. (It's my first time reading it!) :-)
