Friday at last. My office is pretty much deserted today, with everyone on vacation. It's very quiet. I'm waiting for Evan to call; we may or may not go to lunch today, depending on how tired he is from his 6-hour hub training last night. It would be typical of him to sleep till noon and forget that we had made plans, so I shouldn't expect much, but I'm getting antsy. :)

My phone, in my purse, in a drawer, keeps making a sad bleeping noise, sort of like R2D2. I know it wants to be charged, but I'm supposed to let the battery run out completely for the first three cycles. So I have to let it exhaust itself. Poor little phone.

This morning when I was in Kathy's room, getting the dirt from last night's party for the Toronto Clique (during which I stayed in my room watching election results), I saw a Gryffindor baseball cap on her dresser and pounced on it. She got it from Jamie, who got it out of a stuffed animal machine, so she said I can have it! Exciting. Now I just need an occasion to wear a baseball cap. Backwards, because that is the only way I can wear baseball caps. :)

Here's the Friday Five. Why do we, the survey junkies of LJ, not do this more regularly?

1. What is your lineage? Where are your ancestors from?
On my mother's side, I am British and Russian-Austrian Jewish. (How that happened, I'll never know.) My great-great-grandfather was a rabbi. On my father's side, I am Irish and Czechoslovakian. The English and Irish are sort of generalizations, though, since those relatives came to America a looong time ago.
2. Of those countries, which would you most like to visit?
Lately I am developing a fascination with British culture, so that would be at the top of the list. But I would like to go to all of those places.
3. Which would you least like to visit? Why?
Like I said, I would like to see them all, but Czechoslovakia (or the Czech Republic, now) is probably last. I don't know much about the country, but it seems there's a lot of unrest there.
4. Do you do anything during the year to celebrate or recognize your heritage?
Not really.
5. Who were the first ancestors to move to your present country (parents, grandparents, etc)? I think it was my great-grandmother's family (the Russian Jews) because they had to flee Russia during WWI.

Hey.. if the Evan thing falls through, call me and we'll eat lunch. :)

1. What is your lineage? Where are your ancestors from?
I ordered something online a while back that traced my family name back to England. I have no idea about most of my lineage.

2. Of those countries, which would you most like to visit?
Out of that one country, I'd like to visit England ;)

3. Which would you least like to visit? Why?
See above answer...

4. Do you do anything during the year to celebrate or recognize your heritage?
Yes, I speak english year-round in an effort to get "back to my roots". Seriously, I'm totally not a "heritage" person. My family has been born in America for as long as we can remember, so I'm an American. NOT a European American, but an American American (I guess you could say Native American... :P )

5. Who were the first ancestors to move to your present country (parents, grandparents, etc)?
Some guy that would be really, really, REALLY old if he were alive today.

I just found out I get to leave at 3 today, so if I don't go with Evan, I probably better not go out. Plus, I'm going to Bola Pasta tonight with the girls, so I need to save money anyway. Sorry. :(

What is the status of movie night?

I should be asking you that. Movie night is supposed to be Saturday night. If you and Kathy can come, then it's on. If not, then I'll just watch a movie by myself :(

Sorry, my answers are long! By the way, I always thought the Friday Five was something you made up!

1. What is your lineage? Where are your ancestors from?
My grandma on my mom's side is Scandinavian. Her parents came here from Sweden or Norway, I think. My grandpa is a mix of something and California Indian (Native American). (Fun fact: there's a book written on the tribe that we trace back to, and the lady painted on the front is the lady we're related to. She was like a princess or something. :) I swear!) On my dad's side, I'm less clear. There is some Scandinavian again, and then German and English. Somehow when you do the math, I'm at least half Scandinavian. My sister is into geneology, which is how I even know this much.

2. Of those countries, which would you most like to visit?
I'd like to visit America. :) California, even! Okay okay, Norway might be nice. I've seen pretty pictures, and they have the midnight sun during the summertime. England would also be nice. Germany too. I can't decide.

3. Which would you least like to visit? Why?
Um... I don't know. I don't know enough about those places.

4. Do you do anything during the year to celebrate or recognize your heritage?
Unfortunately. My grandma feels the need to cook a traditional Christmas dinner every year. It's Lefsa, Swedish Meatballs, Swedish Tea Ring (I'm starting to think maybe it's Sweden that we're from), and some other things that I don't like. It's a lot of work for something that's not so great. She always has a fit about making it because it's so much work, but she won't stop because of tradition. We'd all prefer to order a pizza. We also celebrate Independence Day because I'm American. :) Oh one more thing.. several members of my family (my sister, nieces, cousins) get health insurance because of being part Native American. We are recognizing our heritage for the benefits. :)

5. Who were the first ancestors to move to your present country (parents, grandparents, etc)? My great-grandparents on my mom's side. I don't know when everyone else came here, except that some were always here, I guess. I don't know how the Native Americans got here in the first place. Do you?

1. What is your lineage? Where are your ancestors from?
Dad is mostly Scottish with a little Prussian, Mom is a hodgepodge, which is mostly Sctch-Irish(lowland scots transplanted to Northern Ireland to supplant the native Irish, and part of the beginning of "the troubles") German and Native American.
It's a part of the family legend that we are descended from the first king of Scotland, whom My father and I are named after. I don't know if it's true, but I have an aunt who has done research and she says it is so.

2. Of those countries, which would you most like to visit?
Scotland

3. Which would you least like to visit? Why?
Northern Ireland. The IRA and the Provos are the reason why not

4. Do you do anything during the year to celebrate or recognize your heritage?
There are things that I could do, but I don't do them. I think about important events on the day they happened.
5. Who were the first ancestors to move to your present country (parents, grandparents, etc)?
My maternal Grandmother claims Cherokee ancestry, so I guess we've been here for a bit.

That's an interesting question

As I understand it, there are several ideas as to the origins of the native American Tribes. Some believe there was a gradual migration from Siberia over the ice and perhaps over a connecting land bridge where the bering strait. There is evidence as well that some of the groups originated in Southern asia and came by boat to the west coast. the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, against all archeological evidence to the contrary teaches that they came from the Land of isreal in cigar-shaped boats. I personally believe they were transplanted by friendly aliens in daisy shaped vessels. ;)

You thought I made it up? :) Nope, it's syndicated, I guess you could say. :) It just had a long hiatus, which is why I stopped doing them. Thanks for answering. :)

Yeah, Don's right about the Native Americans. I personally go with the Bering Strait theory- it seems the most logical to me.

I don't do them regularly because when I see them, I generally don't have answers for them or don't like the questions, quite honestly. But I like this one, so I'll do it :o)

1. What is your lineage? Where are your ancestors from?
My father's family has some Norwegian (hence my last name, Anderson - Son of Ander :o) ), and a little bit of Cherokee Indian, though not enough to claim any financial benefits or anything :o/, and a little of something else that we're not sure about. My mom's family is British. Her maiden name is Kenyon, and all Kenyons trace back to a Lord Kenyon back in the 1700's or something. Pretty cool, I think :o)
2. Of those countries, which would you most like to visit?
England or Norway would both be equally cool
3. Which would you least like to visit? Why?
America...cuz I'm already here ;o)
4. Do you do anything during the year to celebrate or recognize your heritage?
No, although, like Lawson, I speak English ;o)
5. Who were the first ancestors to move to your present country (parents, grandparents, etc)?
I dunno. I would guess the Cherokee Indians?

Oh, btw, Brenda, the Czech Republic is awesome. Especially Prague. And it's conveniently close to both Poland and Austria. So don't knock it too much ;o) Just watch your purse...Prague is one of the world leaders in pick-pocketing ;o) I went over there a few years ago, and there's pics on my web site (http://www.geocities.com/pmaviolinist).
