I'm wearing a sweater. In August.
Aug. 4th, 2003 02:28 pmOkay, I can't think of an interesting way to start this entry.
Friday night I went to the Redbirds game with Alli, Casey, and a couple of the old RUF guys. We had bluff seats (which means you sit on a big hill instead of in a stadium seat. It's more fun than it sounds). There were fireworks after the game, and we quickly noticed that the wind was blowing them our way. Suddenly our friend Matt yelled "LOOK OUT!" and pushed us aside, and a shower of still-flaming sparks fell where we had been sitting. This continued throughout the 15-minute display. Alli and I were clinging to each other, frantically searching the sky for more fire from above. People around us were doing the same. I decided that the show apparently couldn't end until someone on the bluff was on fire. By the time we left, we were completely exhausted from laughing and stress. Oh my gosh, it was funny. I really needed that.
I spent a lot of Saturday with my mom and sister. We had lunch at McAlister's, and then I bought another shirt at Old Navy (and, in the process, found a Seeing Clay shirt, but of course they only had it in small and extra-small). I also got some craft punches on sale at the teachers' supply store. Afterward, my mom came to the apartment for a few minutes and we talked about home improvements. I've pretty much decided to stay there for a while, so I might as well do something with the place. My mom is going to make some curtains for me, and I'm going to see about painting the kitchen. Yay! In the evening I went to another cookout at Chris's. This one was much more pleasant, since there were fewer guys there and no alcohol. :) I baked cookies for the guys, and we watched Men In Black II. It was a nice evening.
Yesterday another bad storm came through while we were at lunch, but nothing major happened, thankfully. I went home and took a nap. When I woke up, the sun was shining and it was like a whole new day. I went to an end-of-summer party for the church group. I had been apprehensive about going, but I ended up having a great time. Everyone was really nice. I even talked to some girls and pleaded with them to come around more often. :) Shane, the guy who's been leading this temporary college/career group, announced that the Sunday School class is going to continue. This is good news. We had singing, which I don't get to participate in much anymore, and I felt very refreshed by the end of the evening. It was great. :)
Today, though, I am not feeling so well and would rather be at home in my bed. Tonight there is food shopping to be done. Then I plan to collapse.
Wheel of Time Update: I'm on book 3 now and things are really picking up. I want to discuss. Who here has read these books?

Date: 2003-08-05 06:11 am (UTC)WoT!
Date: 2003-08-05 11:10 am (UTC)I actually get a rather bad taste in my mouth when I read them. Nothing is ever simple, "Nothing is ever good or bad, but thinking makes it so," etc., and the characters points of view differ as widely as the sky from the earth. And his little quotations at the ends of the books? SO depressing! Oops, I forgot that you've only just finished 3... So you've pretty much seen Rand's PoV, the gals' PoV, Perrin's and Mat's PoV.
Y'know after book 2, I started wondering who Rand had become--it didn't jive well w/ me, but maybe b/c I don't resonate w/ him. What do you think of Rand in book 3? I was pretty surprised he declared himself the dragon reborn...
Ya, I've only had one person to discuss it w/, and I've been going a bit nuts trying to get perspective. It's not something to read by yourself, I can tell you that!
Re: WoT!
Date: 2003-08-05 02:23 pm (UTC)I haven't done too much in-depth analysis, yet. I'm only on book 3. Usually I wait until I'm done with a series (or all that's available) before I start ripping it apart. :) I do like learning about the different Ajahs, though. I don't know what all of them do yet.
Who are your favorite characters? I like Perrin and Min best. (Although Perrin annoys me, fighting his nature and all. Dude! Talk to the wolves already!) Nynaeve is my second-favorite female character. She's hilarious! I also think the Amyrlin Seat is one cool lady. I'm more into the Tar Valon stuff, in case you can't tell. :)
Yeah, Rand is starting to creep me out. I assume he only gets more creepy.
Re: WoT!
Date: 2003-08-07 05:05 pm (UTC)Hmm. I really like Nynaeve and the Amyrlin Seat--strong females yeah! Tar Valon... Perrin totally needs to lighten up, but I like him a lot too--and geez, his wife doesn't need THAT much protection! And he's clueless too! Rand just freaks me out. Mat's pretty funny, once he got healed up from the knife. I like Thom too. =) My favorite forsaken is a tossup between Lanfear and another gal you haven't met yet. You starting 4 yet? Hey whaddya think of the Ogiers? And the Aiel? I totally loved the way he portrayed them in 3--the "dance w/ me" etc. I got a quiver all over when I read that. =) and got really chilled whenever the Black Wind spoke.
I think Rand isn't supposed to be creepy in certain books, but he freaked me out so much in 3 that it sorta colored everything thereafter. I keep wondering how he's supposed to rip the world apart too, so that's probably contributing.
