This is a good day. Today was our company's Soup Challenge, which is my favorite work activity all year. About twenty teams cook soup, and then we get to sample them all and vote for a winner. The proceeds go to charity. I love it because a) it's tasty and b) I get to play food critic, so I'm very serious about my soup sampling. I sit there tasting, with my list of soups, and make professional notes (i.e. smiley faces). I also get very full. There are always some bleah soups, such as one that had a peanut butter base (can you imagine the fat content?), and at least five chilis, none of which get my vote because I don't like beans (sorry, Helen :)). Anyway, it's a lot of fun and today was a nice day for it. The temperature is back to 75-80 degrees. Don't ever move to Memphis if you like your weather constant.

You know what I've always wondered about? Those "De Colores" bumper stickers. I used to think this was a cool Hispanic pride thing, until I noticed that most of the cars sporting them belonged to people who were definitely not Hispanic. As Seinfeld would say, what's the deal with that? It makes about as much sense as me slapping a "Sweden Rules" sticker on my car.

Evan is the best boyfriend ever. Apparently I can't let a day go by without reminding the world of this. Last night we watched West Wing together and ate an insane amount of Pumpkins and Reese's Pieces. Tonight I get to watch my Thursday shows with him. I am happy just to be with him.

Does anyone else think the marshmallow guy on Homestar Runner is creepy?

The "de colores" thing is big with people who have attended a Christian retreat called an "Emmaus Walk".... my dad has been on, and I went on one for teens, called a "Chrysalis" which is where I met Dusty. I can't recall what the whole "De colores" thing meant, but I do remember we had a song about it and it's written on everything dad or I have received since we went on our walks....

OH! Well, that makes a lot more sense. Thank you. :) I do know about Chrysalis. I didn't go to it, but I have a couple of friends who did.

That's where I learned it, anyway, and the only place I've ever heard it. :)

I found this at the site I mentioned:
The phrase "De Colores" is the title of a popular folk song which begins with these words and which has become very popular among cursillistas. Some have attempted to give this expression the status of a ritual, a symbol, or even read into it an expression of the state of conscience: They say "De Colores" to signify that they are in the state of grace. This has been done, however, without foundation. It is simply a song which was popular during the early days of the Cursillo Movement and which provided simple, innocent and even naive words which are used - and continue to be used - as a means of relaxation and amusement during the free periods of the Cursillo. Neither the song itself nor the phrase "De Colores" (or any other symbol) should be allowed to become an "in-group" expression separating cursillistas from others.

Yeah, I remember singing the song in Spanish class, and I knew it was a folk-type song, so I assumed it was some sort of cultural symbol or something. I never knew it had Christian connotations.

I did some googling on the bumper stickers... They're related to the Cursillo Movement. Here is a brief bio from the main page:
The Cursillo Movement is a movement of the Catholic Church. The name Cursillo is Spanish, meaning short course, and is often associated with a 3-Day weekend - which is only one aspect of the Cursillo Movement. The proper name is Cursillo de Cristiandad (short course of Christianity). There is much more to the Cursillo Movement than just a 3-Day weekend.

You can see the rest of it at http://www.natl-cursillo.org/whatis.html if you're interested.

BTW, do you think you'll be able to come to the party next Friday?

Huh. Thanks for looking it up. :)

I should be able to come. I'm planning on it, I just have to check with Evan. I'll get back to you tomorrow.

Yeah, what Lawson said. :) It's kind of a "Catholic Pride" kinda thing. I originally, honestly, thought it was a gay pride thing- you know, the rainbows and all. :)

It's okay, I didn't make the chili. Did you like the cacti though?? That's what I made! :) Oh, and the "watch for falling anvils" sign.

And yes, Lawson, I'll be at your party- maybe with a guest.

Ooo, who are you bringing to the party?

I'm not to big a fan of the marshmallow guy - never have been. My favorites have always been Strong Sad and Marzipan (who, sadly, has barely been around lately)

Yeah, what happened to her?

I like Strong Bad and the Cheat best. ("A parade for the Cheat!") Evan does a fantastic Strong Sad imitation. I'll have to get him to record it or something. :)

I think Strong Sad would come in second.

You know, after replying to your message, I checked the site, and there is a new haloween cartoon with lots of marzipan in it!

"De Colores" is about as Hispanic as "Hallelujah" is Israeli.

The only people I know with those stickers are members of Les Passes- the charity group in Memphis. Maybe they are Catholic-affiliated, but I've always been told it was a Les Passes thing.

I knew it was Catholic, but nothing more. I always wondered too. I haven't googled it in 4 or 5 years, there's a lot more out there on it now.

I love how your layout changed with the coming of REM's "best of" album (well...the comments at least).

Hmmm...I find Marshie scary and amusing.

No, not Strong Sad! I meant the actual marshmallow character. Marshie or whatever his name is. He has a creepy face.
