February Book List
Feb. 29th, 2008 08:52 amHappy Leap Day!
Not the greatest month for books. Blame it on my magazines.
Love Comes Softly, Love’s Enduring Promise, and Love’s Long Journey by Janette Oke*
Love Comes Softly is the classic series of the “pioneer” Christian fiction genre. I read these books many times as a teenager – I guess they were to me what Little House was to a lot of people. It’s a simple story of one pioneer family told over many years. I hadn’t read them in a long time and was feeling uninspired, book-wise, so I’m re-reading. Surprisingly, I’ve only seen the first of the Hallmark Channel movies (and was startled to realize, on later viewings, that Marty is played by Katherine Heigl). Anyone want to talk about the books vs. the movies?
Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen by Julie Powell
Julie Powell is a typical twentysomething New Yorker who decided to cook every recipe in Mastering the Art of French Cooking in one year. Some of you might have read her blog about the experience (I didn’t). It’s an interesting story, and not just about cooking.
The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass by Phillip Pullman
I wish I had written about the Dark Materials books right after I finished them, because now my thoughts and reactions are kind of dulled. However, I can say that my main reaction was anticlimactic. ( More under the cut. )
Anyway. I wouldn’t recommend these books to kids, at least not without some serious discussion. But it’s a well-written story with many touching moments, and I don’t regret reading it.
