I am familiar with the snack as Lawson describes it, but I obviously never knew its official title. We always referenced it as "raisins stuck in peanut butter on celery." ;)
I know what it is, but I don't think I've ever actually eaten it. Celery and peanut butter, yes, but adding raisins seems like it would be a strange texture. Plus, celery has never appealed to me.
Do we get to hear the story behind this question? :)
The story is that I bought celery the other day, and yesterday Evan put some peanut butter on it for a snack. He looked in the cabinet and said, "Hey, raisins!" I said, "Yeah, that's sort of why I bought them," and he didn't have any idea what I was talking about. He had NEVER heard of Ants on a Log, or of putting raisins on celery at all. I was shocked and alarmed, and told him that our kids aren't going to have that kind of deprived upbringing. :)
I guess the raisins are pretty weird, but to me they add just the right note of sweetness. :)
Oooh...so *that's* what it is. Now, I remember the snack, but I didn't know it as "ants on a log." (If I did, I've forgotten in the subsequent years. ;-))
It's celery with peanut butter (or, less traditionally, cream cheese) spread inside (that's the log). Then you put raisins in a row on top of the peanut butter/cream cheese (those are the ants).
I had NO IDEA so few people knew about Ants on a Log. What is this world coming to? I need to dedicate my life to spreading the word...
Wow, I had no idea there were that many people who don't know what ants on a log are! I am proud to be one of the Knowing Ones. That's funny--I was just thinking about them yesterday...those and porcupine meatballs, wondering what it is about food with animal names in that appealed to me back then...
Yes. I also remember a snack we had in Girl Scouts lol an apple half, with peanut butter and chocolate chips. And it bugs the crap out of me and has for quite awhile now that I can't recall what it was called!
