I'm losing all my cool
Jul. 2nd, 2002 11:03 amI had a fun surprise last night!
einbebop sent me a book! :) It's that book about Esther that we were discussing the other day. I was very surprised! Thanks so much! That was so nice of you! (By the way- how did you get my address? Lawson, did you have a hand in this? :))
Today is Day 2 of the government shutdown. I echo Jeremy's sentiments about our state. There's obviously no good solution to the problem. They need to just pick something so we can all get on with our lives. I don't want an income tax, but if they don't decide on something by Friday, there will be huge repercussions. Like fall session being cancelled, and Kathy losing her job and her classes, and Jamie not being able to graduate on time, and the interstate construction sitting dormant till next year... it makes my head spin.
I had other things to say, but for now I'll just do...
1. What game do you feel like playing?
Scattergories. I love that game.
2. If someone came to you with a big vase of flowers to have for your office/desk/home, what kind of flowers would really hit the spot right now?
Tiger lilies, and maybe some other kinds of lilies. I saw some at the lake the other day and I've been thinking about them since.
3. Some birds are cute. Some birds are annoying. What kind of bird would you like to see perched outside right now?
A canary. I've never seen one.
4. If you could choose any scene to look at through a window right now, what would it be?
A beautiful garden, with lots of roses and tulips, and butterflies floating around.
5. What's your favorite animal to see at the zoo?
Penguins and seals. I also like the giraffes and the bears.
6. What is your favorite poem?
This is too hard. There are several poets whose works I really like- John Donne, Christina Rossetti ("Remember" is one of my favorites), Shel Silverstein, and Lilian Moore (great imagery- "A Bridge" is another of my favorites).
7. What are some of the famous/touristy landmarks/landforms you have been to?
I've been to most of the landmarks in Washington, DC; the St. Louis Arch; Ruby Falls; the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, Versailles, and the Louvre; Lake Geneva; Mont Blanc in the Alps; and, I'm told, the Statue of Liberty, although I don't remember it.
8. What famous/touristy landmarks would you like to go to?
The Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, the Golden Gate Bridge, Niagara Falls, Hershey PA, Mount Rainier, Yellowstone, the Great Barrier Reef, the Sydney Opera House, and all the landmarks in London. (Joey: "In London?!?!")
9. If you could sing like anyone, who would it be?
Either Harriet Wheeler from the Sundays (for prettiness) or Mariah Carey (for lungs). :)
10. Which relatives do you get along with the most?
My sister and my dad, and my cousins.
11. Where is the most beautiful place you've ever been camping?
I've only camped in boring local parks- in Jupiter, FL and at Lake Enid about an hour south of here.
12. What was the best hotel you've stayed at?
The New Orleans Hilton, where I stayed for my business trip last winter. (Thanks, everyone, for enjoying the Embassy Suites. By doing so, you give me job security. :))
13. What is your favorite aspect of your job (if no job, of whatever you do with your time most)?
My co-workers. Also, it's strictly 8-5 most of the time, so I am free to have a life.
14. If you can remember, how long was the longest letter/email that you've ever received from a friend or relative?
I got a letter from my next-door neighbor once that was 8 pages long, but it was on those little stationery sheets.
15. What's the most daredevil thing you've ever done?
16. How would your best friend describe you in one word?
17. What kind of music did you used to avoid, but have grown to like?
Adult contemporary music. Like Elton John. I'm appreciating Elton John more and more as I get older- kind of scary.
18. Speaking of change, what has significantly changed about you/your views over the past 5 years?
A lot. I've been a Christian since I was young, but I became Reformed about 3 years ago, and that changed my views on many things. I'm graduated and on my own now. I think I'm more secure now than was 5 years ago. And I have a lot more friends.
19. If you're not married: would you like to write your own vows or stick to the traditional ones if you get married?
I like the traditional ones, and I think you're not allowed to write your own in a proper Reformed wedding. :) But I would like to add some things of my own at the end, like Jessica was saying.
20. What is your favorite color of eyes?
I used to go nuts over big brown eyes (like Keanu Reeves). But now I like blue, too. It really doesn't matter, so long as they belong to someone I love. :)
I have hazel eyes too. What do you know! Maybe we should start a club.

Date: 2002-07-02 12:18 pm (UTC)Yes, it came to my parents' house. Kathy and I went by last night to pick up some more pine bedding for the bunny, and I brought the mail in. I was glad I was there to get it, because my parents would have wanted to know what it was and who it had come from, and the response "Someone I know from online" would have sent my mother into convulsions. :)

Date: 2002-07-03 06:29 pm (UTC)I agree, though; my experience with people who write their own vows is that they'd have been better off theologically if they'd just left the traditional vows alone. Not that traditional vows are by any means set; if you look up the old vows, like from medieval times, there's all sorts of stuff in them that most people don't say anymore. But that's another story. :-)
What's "A Wedding Story"?
