Here's a story. Of several people, none named Brady.

While I was in college (I say that like it's so long ago), we used to eat lunch on Fridays at the Baptist Student Union. This tradition began because I was dating [livejournal.com profile] yakko7178, who was very active in the BSU at the time. However, Kathy and Emily (and later Jamie) and I continued to go there for four years, mainly because they provided a good, home cooked meal for 2 dollars.

Now, many kinds of people turned up at the BSU for Friday lunch. Most were students, obviously, but there were always a few older people who caused you to wonder where they had come from. One such man was a regular at our table. He was around 55 or 60 years old and always wore a satin baseball jacket. He didn't say much to us at first, but as the months went by, he got to know us. He seemed most interested in Em, due to her obsession with the Atlanta Braves. It got to the point that he'd find us as soon as we came in the door and proceed to ask Em questions about the Braves (and sometimes about herself) until he left. He was not a student or professor at U of M, and had no real reason to be there at all. So by our senior year, we were a little alarmed. "I wonder if That Guy will be there today," we'd say to each other, with trepidation, on Fridays. We had to call him That Guy because, to our shame, we still did not know his name.

You can't exactly ask someone their name after knowing them for four years, so we needed a game plan. We decided Ryan, who had never been to the BSU with us, was our best bet. We explained the situation to him. So at lunch that Friday, you could have heard a pin drop when he introduced himself to That Guy. And at last we had a name- Bruce. BSU Bruce. And so he remained to us until the day we graduated. We never found out who he really was or where he came from.

Ryan then decided it would be fun to stalk Em online using the name BSUBruce, but was unable to register the name on IM or anything. It's too bad, because if he had succeeded, this would have been a much funnier story.

As the brother in The Wedding Singer said, "I don't know what I just said, but I said something."

Ick.. I hate Baptists.

:)

I think I've had situations like that where I talked to someone a lot but never knew their name. Or maybe vise versa. Like, there's this guy Nathan at the grocery store, and he knows my sister and brother-in-law (who are now in NH), and he knows I'm Rochelle's sister, but I'm not sure he even knows my name! And we always chat a little when I go to the store and see him.

Yeah... those Baptists... :)

That's funny! I'm glad we're not the only ones who never got around to asking someone's name. :)
