news and books
Jan. 21st, 2003 10:58 amI am back at work.
Weekend highlights:
- Our freako weather on Saturday. We had a flash blizzard. Everything was covered with snow in a matter of minutes. Suddenly the sun came out, and within a few more minutes, all the snow was gone. Very, very weird.
- Watched Minority Report with the guys. I liked it, except for all the eyeball business. I couldn't restrain my shrieking whenever the eyeballs came on screen, causing Evan to make his "What a girl" face. :)
- Went to Alli's birthday party. We watched the conclusion of the Titans-Raiders game (*sob*) and ate cake. (For the Super Bowl- Tampa Bay all the way. Because anyone who beats the Raiders is my friend.)
- Spent a pleasant (!) afternoon with my mom yesterday, working on scrapbooks and talking about woman things. Enjoyed looking at Bun, who sat happily on the couch for several hours. He's never stayed on the couch until recently, and now he loves it. He's so funny. :)
1. Which book are you currently reading?
All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot. It's about a British veterinarian- the first of four books. Em told me long ago that I would like them, so I'm finally starting.
2. What book did you read last?
Tell Me If The Lovers Are Losers by Cynthia Voigt. I picked it up at thrift a few years ago. It's a strange book, but good. I recommend it.
3. What book are you planning on reading next?
Jurassic Park. Evan recommended it. I have to get it from him first, though. :)
4. Do you own most of the books you read, or do you borrow them from a library?
I love the library, but I have a bad habit of finding too many interesting books and not finishing them all before the due date. So I don't go as often as I used to. But I still visit pretty frequently.
5. Who was your favourite author when you were a child?
Beverly Cleary. I wanted to be Ramona.
6. What were some of your favourite books when you were a child?
The Ramona books; Lois Lowry's Anastasia books; the Baby-Sitters Club
7. Which male literary character would you like to take out on a date and why?
"Laurie" Lawrence. He was so sweet and fun-loving. :)
8. Which author would you most like to have a `one-to-one' with?
Beverly Cleary. I've read a lot about her, and she seems like such a nice, humble woman. Also, she's the only one of my favorite authors who wouldn't make me want to do the old "I'm not worthy" on the floor. :)
9. Which fictional character would you most like to have a 'one-to-one' with?
Jo March, so I could be inspired by her determination. :)
10. Which literary character would you least like to be stranded on a desert island with and why?
Sauron. Or Voldemort. LOL. :)
11. Which character would you most like to be stranded with?
Anne. She would keep me in good spirits. :)
12. In which literary/fictional location would you most like to live?
The Shire. Or Avonlea.
13. Which is the best TV/film adaptation of a book you have seen? Why?
LOTR has been excellent so far. As you all know, I have had problems with some of the changes, but Peter Jackson has the spirit of the books and that's what's important.
14. Which is the worst TV/film adaption of a book you have seen? Why?
Don't get me started on the Anne (of Green Gables) movies. They start out okay, but get progressively worse. Does anyone know where the heck the plot of Anne III came from? Wouldn't it have been better to make Rilla of Ingleside, with its canonical WWI content, into a movie instead? Oh, the humanity!
15. What film adaption do you actually like more than the book?
Chocolat. I read the book after seeing the movie, though, so I wonder if that was an influence.
16. What book do you like better than the film adaption?
Almost all of them. :P I have to make a special mention, though, for The Princess Diaries. I don't care how much everyone likes that movie- it butchered the book. Bleah.
17. What are your top 5 favourite books?
Lord of the Rings (counts as one)
Little Women
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (though I love the others, this is my favorite so far)
The Blue Castle (LM Montgomery)
Rilla of Ingleside (LM Montgomery)
18. Who is your favourite author?
Tolkien for the adventure side of me, LM Montgomery for the frilly side of me. And C.S. Lewis just for brilliance. :)
19. What is the most memorable line delivered in a film?
I'm assuming this means a book-film. But it's still too hard.
20. What is your least favourite book and why?
Native Son. I can't remember who the author is. I had to read it for senior AP English. It's about an African-American house servant in the 20's who kills his employer's daughter by burning her in the furnace, and then joins the Communist party. I never finished it.
21. If your life was a book, which author would you choose to write it?
Caroline B. Cooney, because I really like her writing style. She can make anything seem exciting, which would be necessary when writing about my life. :P :)
