I'll be his and he'll be mine
Jun. 25th, 2004 11:18 amBet you’re all surprised to see me here when I’m off work, huh? Well, there’s a good reason...

I can now freely tell that Evan told me on April 13 that he intended to marry me. We didn’t want to say anything to people until there was something...tangible to get excited about. :) It’s been hard to keep my mouth shut, but I knew it would be worth it later. Anyway, lately he’d been dropping all kinds of hints that it would be a while. So I wasn’t expecting anything for at least a couple of months. He completely surprised me.
Evan asked me about a month ago to send him pictures of rings that I liked. I e-mailed him a picture of a three-stone white gold ring, which is what he got, only bigger than the one I picked. :D On Wednesday he went to Kay and bought the ring. Then he called me at work to ask for my dad’s work number, because he needed to talk to him about a truck problem a friend of his was having- it was a Ranger and my family has two Rangers. So I gave him the number, not thinking twice about it. He called my dad and asked if they could have lunch. My dad had already had lunch, but, sensing what was going on, asked if he wanted to come to the office. So Evan drove all the way to my dad’s work, went through security, got to his office, and asked him if he could marry me. Of course my dad said yes, and they were both very happy. :) Afterwards Evan called me and said they had had a nice talk on the phone about trucks. I completely bought it. (He didn’t go to my house because he was afraid the rest of my family couldn’t keep it secret.)
Evan decided that he wanted to propose while Emily was in town, so we could all be together. The next opportunity he’d have would be Kathy’s wedding a month away, and he says he couldn’t have waited another month. So yesterday, Kathy, Em, and I were going to meet at the apartment after work, before going out for Em’s bachelorette night. He decided to seize the day, so he called Kathy and Em and told them what he was planning. He then called me and asked if he could drop by before we left to give me a CD of our friends’ offertory song in church last week. Also, we weren’t going to see each other till tonight, which pathetically has become a long time for us to be apart. So I said fine.
My last hour or so at work was totally frantic, and I got home, stressed, to find Em and Kathy already there. Em said she had just decided to come early. Kathy tried to de-stress me from my day. I didn’t think anything was going on. As I was going to get the mail, I said, "Oh, Evan’s coming by...he said it’s to bring me a CD, but really he just wants to see me." This was basically what he had said; I was just being silly. Good thing I wasn’t looking at them.
Evan arrived a few minutes later and came to sit with us in the living room. He was on the couch, I was on the floor in front of him, Kathy was sedately working on Em’s fake veil for our night out, and Em was just sitting. Suddenly Evan said, "Brenda, stand up." I was like, "Huh?" He asked me again. I thought it was bizarre, but I said "Okay" and stood. Then he got on his knee, pulled a ring out of his pocket, and said, "Brenda, will you marry me?" I felt like someone had hit me in the head, or like I was dreaming. I said "Are you serious!?!?" (He later said, "No, this is something guys just do for fun.") Kathy and Em started cracking up. Then I came to my senses and said "Yes, of course," and they clapped and we hugged and kissed and everything was wonderful. I was absolutely stunned. I mean, I’d thought about places he might propose, and my own living room was at the bottom of the list. I would have never suspected. I think it was so sweet, too, that he wanted my two best friends to be there.
So after many phone calls, we all, along with Jamie, Kathy’s Daniel, and a friend of his, went to McAlister’s for dinner (as we had planned that afternoon). Our favorite server, Christine, was there, so we told her the news. She was excited. I ordered a chicken grill salad but couldn’t eat it- I still can’t eat today, which the girls assure me is normal. Then I had to part from Evan and we girls went to Tunica, where we had a pretty good time. Evan meanwhile went to Bible study, where he told our church friends the news. He was surprised by how excited they all were. I’ve already had a call today from the singles minister, who was there, and he said "the room erupted." :) It makes me so happy to hear how happy everyone is about this.
Anyway, he came over after I got home and we discussed some of the logistics. Nothing is set in stone yet, but we’ve pretty much settled on late November or early December. Five months away! I’m going to marry the love of my life in five months!!!
I’m still kind of in shock..it’s sinking in a little at a time. Praise God for all His blessings to us, and being sovereign over everything.

Date: 2004-06-25 09:35 am (UTC)Also, as an aside, I'm really impressed that you waited to say anything until after you had a ring on your finger. I know lots of couples (or halves of couples) who go about telling other people that "oh, we know we'll get married" without making any real promises to each other. This makes me inwardly roll my eyes and wonder if they're really so sure. You waited for the promise! That's admirable.

Did you read my post about having to wait 6 months for a book, and it being worth the wait & how it could apply to other things? ;-)
WOW though - I think it would be hard for me to keep something like that in, too. ;)
CONGRATS!!!!
