This month's book list is lame, since I've hardly had time to sleep, let alone read. I'm current on my Entertainment Weeklys, though...do I get a gold star for that? :P

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte (e-book)
I read an article about the re-issuing of this as "Edward and Bella's Favorite Book" (which isn't exactly true), and thought maybe I should finally read it. WHY do people love this book? The characters are completely selfish and hateful. The events are disturbing and horrible. I hated almost everything about it. Bleah.

Mistborn: The Final Empire and The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson
Brandon Sanderson was selected to finish the Wheel of Time series after Robert Jordan died. Our friend Matt, a fellow WOT fan, read his original trilogy right after the announcement to see whether he was a good choice. Recently he insisted we read it too. I wasn't too enthused about it until Evan came home from work, threw the third book down in front of me, and said, "Best ending to ANY. Fantasy. Series. EVER." Considering the number of fantasy series we've read, I decided I should start immediately. The story itself is kind of hard to describe, but it's very good and I've enjoyed it. I'm about 2/3 through the last book, so you'll see that one next month. And I think Sanderson was the perfect choice to replace Jordan, for many reasons.

Discussion question: should cookbooks count as books read?

I read Wuthering Heights last year and felt the same way. They were the most despicable people I could imagine!

WHY do people love this book?
I have no idea. I hate it. It's not romantic, it's deeply disturbing and depressing. I just felt like shaking practically all the characters and telling them to GROW UP already!

Oh, forgot the other question. Should cookbooks count as books read. Yes, if you sat down and read one all the way through, then I don't see why not. But if you skimmed through large parts of it, then I wouldn't.

I agree about Wuthering Heights. Glad to hear I'm not alone!

I haven't read Wuthering Heights, but maybe now I won't since it doesn't sound very uplifting.

And I'd forgotten completely about the Mistborn trilogy. It's on my to-read list. After I finish my current stack, I'll have to get the first from the library.

WHY do people love this book?

Beats the heck out of me! I hate it. I hate it as much as I love Jane Eyre, which is a lot.

I don't know why people love WH either. In my opinion it's completely mis-labeled as a great classic romance. It's not romantic. It's not really even a love story. I once heard someone say that WH is not a love story, it's a revenge story, and ever since then it's made a lot more sense to me. It's an interesting book if you don't expect great romance from it.

You can commiserate with Daniel over Wuthering Heights- he still complains about having to read it in high school over 10 years ago. He loves to talk about how much he hates that book. lol!

I read it too, but can't remember a single thing about it other than that I think I had mono when I read it.

I actually used to really like Wuthering Heights (nobody kill me!). I don't know if I still like it because it's been years since I've read it, but back in my late teenhood I read it several times and really enjoyed it (as much as one can enjoy such a dark book). I've always enjoyed it more than Jane Eyre.

I rather think I may not like Wuthering Heights as much now if I were to read it over. Life experience will do that to you.

Totally jealous of how much time you've had to read this year. :)

And I agree about Wuthering Heights - I always heard so much about that one and Pride & Prejudice as a kid. I LOVED P&P but could not for the life of me get into WH. My somewhat darker friend kinda dug it, but I was pretty turned off by the characters. Oh well. At least you can say you've read it!

Are you still reading WoT? I gave up after the horrible Crown of Swords and the mediocre Path of Daggers. One of the biggest disappointments ever. The first 6 books were so fantastic and then...blah.

Yeah, I'm current on WOT, but I'll have to look at the last one again before the new one comes out. I forget what was going on. :P I've warned many people away from the series...it's too late for me, but save yourselves!

Yeah that whole thing is such a fiasco.

Have you read The Dark Tower series?

No, it's Stephen King. I just have that series and WoT linked in my head because they both took (are taking) about 900 years to finish and I was wondering if you've read it. But Dark Tower is fantastic. One of my all-time favorites. It's not at all like King's other stuff; the story revolves around a character called the gunslinger who is out to find the fabled Dark Tower. It's set in a post-apocalyptic world. Knowing how much you like fantasy stuff I think you would love it.
