The story I am about to tell may seem unbelievable. Unfortunately, I am not making it up. :P

Yesterday, my day began going downhill as soon as I got home. I was confronted with a very gross cat problem. As soon as I took care of that, my mother called to tell me that she'd checked on airfares for me to meet them in Miami (in July) and thought they were out of my price range and maybe I better not go. This conversation left me very upset. But then Alli came over, and we sat quietly watching TV, and I felt a little better.

Just before 9:00, we heard a huge crash behind the apartment, where we residents park. (I have drawn a layout of the area to give you a better idea of the situation.) I ran to the back window and saw that a car had plowed into the chain-link fence that separates our complex from the houses on the next street over. As I watched, he backed up, straightened out, and drove off, weaving all over the driveway. I ran downstairs and saw that a fencepost was bent on the ground, and the back and side of my car (ironically, the same corner that I backed into the mailbox a year ago) was all scratched up (but, thankfully, not crushed). I decided to call the police, because the guy was obviously drunk, and if I called quickly, the cops who sit on Poplar all night should be able to catch him before he hurt someone. So I called 911 and they said they'd send a car.

Between the call and the arrival of the police, I called my mom and Ryan to tell them what had happened. I also called Kathy, who was out with Daniel et famille, five times. She never answered. Finally the traffic cop arrived, and Alli and I went down to meet her. She pulled around the back and started taking my information and assessing the damage. As we stood there, we saw a security truck down at the end of the circle. I had wondered why the security man hadn't seen/heard this, because he patrols the complex constantly. But he was there, talking to another man.

After a while, Alli decided to leave. She walked around the corner to her car, and came running right back. "The other car is still here! It's right there around the corner!" So we all migrated to the corner, and the security man (Larry :)) came right over to us. It turned out that the man Larry was talking to was the driver of the other car, and he was definitely drunk. Shortly, another traffic cop arrived in response to Larry's call, and called the regular police. Larry advised me to get some paper to write down the guy's insurance info. I went upstairs and saw that my dad had called; he was coming over.

When I went back to the corner, the other police had arrived. They found a huge open bottle of whiskey or something in the guy's car, confirmed that he was drunk, cuffed him, and put him in the car. Around this time, my dad and brother showed up and helped me get the guy's insurance information. It turned out that the drunk man had just hit a car driven by a pregnant lady at a nearby intersection, then drove off to my neighborhood, presumably to hide. I got upset about the pregnant lady, but as far as I know, she's fine, so that's a real blessing.

Anyway, the cops called for other DUI cops. So when Kathy drove up a little after 10, she saw two traffic cop cars, two regular police cars, a security truck, a crushed station wagon, several curious neighbors, my dad, my brother, and me. I thought her eyes were going to fall out of her head. :) Eventually the tow truck came for the other guy's car, and everyone dispersed, and I went to bed.

So I've spent my morning on the phone with the guy's insurance company. I'm hoping they will cooperate and I won't have to call Corey B. Trotz (Memphis's most popular car wreck attorney). The damage isn't too bad, but my dad estimates it'll be 500 to 800 dollars. I'm just thankful that I wasn't in the car, and that the damage wasn't worse, and that the pregnant lady is okay and no one else got hurt. The end.

That drunk guy not only deserves to be in jail for a long time, but he deserves to have Corey B. Trotz called on him. Too bad you weren't actually in the car... you could have gotten thousands and thousands of dollars (but I'm glad you weren't there because that means you're not hurt.) I don't think Mr. Trotz handles accidents that involved parked cars, but it should be obvious to the guy's insurance company that his drunk-driving self was to blame. You're lucky he has insurance... my sister was hit at an intersection by a drunk driver who didn't have insurance, so we never saw a penny... :(

I totally agree... This guy is lucky that he didn't kill anyone, and he'll probably get less than 3 months in jail...

Brenda! I'm sorry about your bad night. I think the first badness mentioned (cat-related) would've probably been the most horrible for me. :P

It's weird about the Miami thing because you just specifically planned your vacation time so you'd be able to go there AND go to California. Hm.

Yeah. It was pretty horrible, but in the grand scheme of things, it seemed silly to complain about it. :P

Oh, there's no "hmmm" about it, as you and I both know. :( Fortunately, I found a cheap fare this morning, so I'm still going. Maybe she was hoping to discourage me enough that I wouldn't even look for other flights.

what a yucky night

I'm glad that nobody happened to be in or near the driveway or anything. Are you gonna talk to the pregnant lady? I'm glad she didn't go into premature labor or have a miscarriage or anything, cuz if I remember correctly from seeing movies and TV, doesn't traumatic experiences cause that to happen, or something? I don't mean to cause any worry or anything, just curious.

Was your car the only one in the driveway that was damaged, and what did the aftermath look like in the daytime?

I don't know the pregnant lady and I wasn't there when her car was hit. I found out about it later, from the police. I hope she is still okay.

Yeah, it was just my car. I'll take pictures of the fence area later today. The entire fencepost was uprooted...concrete and everything.

Oh, wow.
It kinda reminds me of the time we had drug dealers across the street - I think they were involved with some petafiles and stuff. Anyway, they didn't get rid of them until one of them plowed into a tree down the road - and a bunch of other stuff happened. It was scary, since I was only 13 at the time.

I hope everything works out okay!

That's really scary! I'm glad they hauled those people away. We lived next door to drug dealers in Miami, and they got busted after a year or so.
