Okay, I know I'm stupid for having to ask this, but can someone explain how to download a (free) font from a website? All fonts are zipped now, it seems, and I don't know how to unzip them. I've tried opening them, extracting them to the fonts folder, and everything else I can think of. They never show up in Word. I need some weddingy font choices for my invitations and at this rate I'll have to use Arial. Please reply and use small words. Thank you.

Yesterday was not the greatest day. We're in the midst of a mind-numbing data entry project at work, which has caused my tendonitis to flare up again from all the tabbing over. Tendonitis is one of the most annoying sensations I know of. It's not so much a pain as a sort of nonstop painful itch inside my arm. I can't be wimpy and beg off the project, so I just have to put up with it. I have my arm brace on, though, and it's helping a little. At least I have a nice long computerless week coming up soon.

On the positive side, we booked a fantastic photographer last night. My mom and I met with him and are both very excited about him. He's very talented and organized. Now all we need is a florist. God is really bringing this wedding together. Yay God! :) After the photographer meeting, we met up with my dad and Evan for dinner, which was a nice surprise. Then Evan and I went to the library. To my excitement they had Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities, and I'm already about halfway through it. I am simultaneously fascinated and disturbed, and feeling more thankful than ever that I didn't go that route.

The weather is absolutely amazing. Today's high is 79. I have never gotten an early fall as a birthday present before, but I'm loving it. :) Also I'm having lunch with my friend Kristin today, which might help alleviate the restlessness I've been feeling all week. Evan feels similarly bored. I don't know what's wrong with us. We have a nice action-packed weekend coming up, though! I'm so excited about the Olympics starting tomorrow. I love the Olympics. I still have a tape of the 1998 figure-skating long program with Michelle Kwan and Tara Lipinski. I think I'll tape the gymnastics this year since it's my favorite of the summer events. Go USA!

Hi guys. Thanks so much for all your prayers - I know they made a difference! Evan is fine. More about Wreck Day. )

On Saturday, once we were sure Evan felt good enough to go out, we got a lot of things done. We finished our Target registry and did our Home Depot one in one shot. Then we booked our rehearsal dinner, which was a huge load off my mind. Also, last week we signed a DJ whom we all really liked. She recommended a more reasonable photographer (the one we've talked to is pretty expensive), so we're meeting with him on Wednesday. I have a good feeling about him. After that, the only really big thing we need to book is the florist. Woo hoo!

Sunday was a nice day. At church, the wife of one of our Sunday School leaders shared about their recent mission trip to Guatemala. It was very eye-opening. (Did you know Guatemalan children only go to school four hours a day?) I also got to talk to [livejournal.com profile] admael between services. Her new haircolor is very cool. :) After church we went to lunch at Mozzarella's, which Evan and I enjoyed more than usual since we're cutting way back on our eating out. In the afternoon I took a refreshing walk, and later Ryan came over to eat spaghetti with us. I also made an apple pie for Evan- it's his favorite. It was much better than the last one. My cooking is improving! Yay!

So that's what I've been doing. Despite the drama, it ended up being a pretty nice weekend. Our time together was even better knowing how much worse the accident could have been. I can't wait to be married. 110 days! And tonight Kathy is coming over! I haven't seen her since her wedding. This is the longest we've been apart in...well, a long time. :) So I'm excited about hanging out with her. God is good.

One of my co-workers brought in Sunday's Dilbert strip, which is a timely reflection on our office situation. I really ought to read Dilbert more, just as I need to watch Office Space again now that I've been a cube drone for almost three years.

Em and her Daniel will be proud that I went to the Shelby County Republican Headquarters today with one of my co-workers. I got one of those square black W stickers. My co-worker went a little nuts and bought several stickers, a button, and a hat. :)

Last night after Bible study, Luke and Myla (and this guy Adam, whom we've all been getting to know) came over with their guitars to play the wedding song for Evan and I. Well, as I expected, it was incredible. It's called "Chosen Family" and I guarantee there won't be a dry eye in the church when they sing it. I'm so humbled and moved when I think about it. Before we went to my place, Myla was making up some horrible song and trying to convince me that that's what the song was. "And it has this voice-over in the middle...Baby, I'm so glad we're getting married...Then there's a rap!" Later, Luke announced that he'd also written a song for us, and made something up on the spot that made me turn beet red until Myla pleaded with him to stop. So in comparison, the real song was even better. :) Anyway, they ended up staying and jamming until pretty late. It was awesome. My friends are so talented. I wish their stuff was copyrighted so I could post it for all of you to hear. Luke has a hilarious song about whiskey, which I enjoy despite the fact that I'm not a drinker.

Tonight Ryan and I are McAlisting, and then Debra's joining us for fun times at Old Navy. I'm aware that I shouldn't be shopping, but with these clearance prices I seriously cannot stay away. There's a difference between blowing money on full-price clothes, and investing in reasonable clothes at a great price. Hello, my name is Becky Bloomwood. Anyway, Debs is spending the night, which should be fun. It'll be her first test of the futon.

Kathy is home! She called me a couple of hours ago. I didn't realize how much I'd missed her until I heard her voice. The honeymoon was good- they parasailed and went on a hot-air balloon ride! She recommends the parasailing, so if they have that in Jamaica, we'll probably go too. Anyway, I'm so glad she's back.

I am so rich in friends. Last night was the last Bible study of the summer at our church, and we had a great time worshiping and spending time with everyone. Our friend Chris is preparing to go off to Mississippi State to be the RUF intern there, so I'm glad we're all getting quality time together. In the middle of singing last night, Evan and I had the great idea to have Matt (who's a groomsman) and Chris sing something before our ceremony. We had been stressing trying to figure out the pre-ceremony music. This way we don't have to inconvenience any additional people. :) We asked them after the study, and they excitedly went back to their posts and "auditioned" different songs for us. We quickly settled on "Jesus, Lover of My Soul," because they have a great arrangement of it that they've already performed for the church. They're comfortable with it, it's a great song, and it has "love" in it, so my mom can't complain that it's not weddingy enough. Also, I don't know if I'd mentioned that Myla wrote a song for our wedding that she and Luke are going to sing during the unity candle. All our friends have heard it and say it's wonderful and will make me cry. Tonight after our IPC study, they're finally going to perform it for us, so expect reviews tomorrow. I'm so humbled by the way things are coming together better than I had planned. Our wedding's going to rock! :)

Oh, and Robert happily agreed to perform our ceremony. Again, most of our friends have talked to him recently and all report that he's really excited. He just got ordained last year, so ours will be the first wedding he's done. How cool is that? Again, God comes through. When will I stop being surprised?

We saw The Village this weekend. I highly recommend it. It's not so much scary as thought-provoking. Unfortunately, I can't really say anything about it without giving it away, so you'll have to take my word for it.

Evan's car inadvertently acquired a name this weekend. On Saturday night he was trying to tell me about his gas mileage and said "Hey, guess how long my fill-up lasted," but I thought he said "my Philip." I thought, is this another car part I don't know about? He clarified, laughed a lot and then said that he refused to have a car named Philip. I told him that was too bad. I mean, my last car was named Petunia. It could be worse. [livejournal.com profile] contradictions and [livejournal.com profile] fettman can be happy. :)

My birthday is in 14 days. I want two things for my birthday: a new watch battery, and a stereo repair. My Kenwood hasn't worked in at least six months and I don't know what's wrong with it...the standby light never goes out, but the stereo won't turn on. If I want to listen to music at home, I have to do it from the computer. It's not the same. So I'd like that fixed. Evan knows this so I assume it'll be taken care of. :)

My hair is too long. I noticed this suddenly on Sunday. I know some of you are having fun growing your hair out, and that's great, but curly hair doesn't react so well to longness. The longer it is, the more time and hair products it requires, and the worse it looks. So I think I'll get another trim before we go to New Hampshire (only three weeks from now!). I wish I could go now because it's driving me nuts, but I can't afford to go more than every two months or so. I have to get highlights, too, and it's so expensive...but it looks so much better than my natural color. Sigh. The eternal, internal battle over the highlights wages on.

I'm currently reading The Lovely Bones, which I've been hearing about for years, and it's fascinating. It's about a girl who is killed, and then watches from heaven as her family grieves and solves her murder. It might sound awful (and obviously, it's very theologically incorrect), but I can't put it down. This week I've been more in the mood to read than usual. I just finished This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen, and I was so into it the other day that I was almost late for work. Any other Sarah Dessen fans here besides [livejournal.com profile] crystallia?

It's too bad I'm in such a reading mood, because I'm never home to do it. Gandalf has been lonely - he's allowing me to pet him for record amounts of time. Evan and I are the only people he ever sees, and us not very often. Every night this week we've been out, mostly taking care of wedding stuff. So I have a neglected apartment (the vacuuming situation is getting extreme) and a neglected cat. I worry about him. He's a social cat who needs company. It'll be nice when the wedding is over and we can settle into a more relaxed life, one in which I'm home for more than an hour at a time.

I use a lot of parentheses.

We met with the photographer I like last night. He seems very good and I like his work, but he's a little more expensive than we had planned. We're going to see about a guy my dad knows, just for comparison. Evan and my dad both liked the first guy, though, so we might choose him anyway. He had a really cool album option with an aluminum cover and a black and white photo screened onto it. We'll see.

Happy Friday, everybody!

Happy birthday classy_galLisa!

Yay - Evan has his new (to him) car. He actually picked it up Tuesday night. It's a Metro like mine. His is a '94 and mine is a '99, but there's not much difference between them. They look exactly the same inside. This is the nicest car I've ever known him to have. It drives fairly smoothly and the air conditioning works! God has provided. I'm so thankful Evan doesn't have to drive the ticking time bomb anymore. Last night he washed both of our cars, and then we went to the library together. It's still so exciting to me that he likes going to the library as much as I do. Geek love.

Oh, speaking of geekiness, I saw a greeting card that had a picture of Gandalf (the wizard, not my cat) on the front, and said "Happy Birthday from Gandalf!" On the inside it said, "You actually got a little excited, didn't you? Man, what a geek!" Someone should get that for me.

I've been looking at different wordings for wedding invitations, and some of them are pretty funny. The best one I've found so far is "Mr. and Mrs. ___ invite you to witness a miracle - the marriage of their daughter ____!" I told Evan that was the most appropriate, given our history. Instead, he keeps suggesting things like "You are reluctantly invited..." LOL. I guess I'll stick with the traditional phrasing.

Target has those cute pink-and-black initial purses on sale. Of course, all they have is A, L, and R. They never have B! I've been looking forever for an initial purse, and the only one I've found was at Kohl's and it was kind of shoddy-looking. Hey Danielle- if you find a cute B purse in all your purse shopping, let me know. :)

Random observation: On American Idol, everyone kept saying how unique Fantasia was and how they'd never heard someone with her style. Well, I was listening to my 1998 Grammy Nominees CD last week, and you know who sounds exactly like Fantasia? Erykah Badu. Listen if you don't believe me. And where is she now? Weird. On another music note (ha ha), I've noticed all 3 Doors Down songs seem to lead to thoughts of Harry Potter. All those angsty songs about lonely, misunderstood heroes. Any one of them could go on the soundtrack.

So tomorrow my best friend is getting married. And then all the brides will be wives. Except for...(Elle Woods voice)....ME!!! LOL. Just kidding. Man, I'm spastic today. Maybe this is my brain's way of dealing with such a big event. Anyway, I hope everyone has a good weekend!
chestnutcurls: (i know)
I always enjoy naturallycurly.com. I was there looking at hairstyles and came across a hilarious article. Read and relate if you are curly-headed. Excerpt: Perhaps I shared my dream for long hair with a little too much pathetic fervor. It was like I was some kind of leukemia child. People could look at my split-ended, heat-fried frizzy head and their hearts cried for pity. "Someone grant her her wish!" was their benevolent impulse. Since all three of us kids have curly hair, and Evan's mom has curly hair (though she straightens it), I've realized my future kids are doomed. :) At least I'll know what to do with their curls, so they won't look freakish. They'll also probably be blond, which is weird to think about.

My best friend is getting married in three days. It hasn't sunk in yet. I am getting married in 130 days. I bought my wedding invitations today at a place called Xpedx that a friend told me about. I got 150 blank invitations and accessories for just over $100- why don't more people print their invites themselves? It's such an easy thing to save on. Anyway, they have a border of silver flowers, and unless Evan or my family hates them, I'll be printing them in a month or so. One more thing out of the way! Yay!

I had interesting things to discuss, but I have to work now. Thanks for all your support about the photography situation. I'll have updates later.
chestnutcurls: (Florida girl)
I spent two hours at my parents' last night talking to my sister about marriage, jewelry, and politics, among other things. I told her how I'm close to not watching the Today show anymore, because Katie Couric is becoming almost unbearable in her liberalism. A few mornings ago, Kathy and I were eating breakfast in the dining area when we heard NBC Special Report music. Immediately we went to see what was going on. Since 9/11, whenever I hear special report music, I sort of steel myself to see more planes flying into buildings. (I don't think I'm alone in that, either.) So once most of the viewers were on edge, what was the special report for? A Kerry/Edwards photo op! Unbelievable. We flipped to the other channels, and of course, none of them thought this worthy of a break in programming. Kathy was disgusted. Now she keeps saying things like, "Breaking news! Kerry's brushing his teeth for the first time since he announced his candidacy! Look, he even got the back ones!"

I'm going to miss her.

Gandalf has been funny lately. Every morning just before I leave, I give him a cat treat. He's good at routine, so as soon as he hears me go to the door with my shoes on, he hurries over. Well, the other day I was walking into the kitchen, and he came barreling around the corner and literally knocked me out of my shoes. It was hilarious. Apparently the treat is the high point of his day. I explained that I couldn't give it to him if my arms were broken, but that hasn't deterred him from tripping me before.

Honeymoon waffling, etc. )

I had lunch today with Alli, my third bridesmaid. She bought my lunch and gave me a copy of Chicken Soup for the Bride's Soul. Isn't she nice? I'm so glad she's going to be in the wedding. And now I have something to read on the plane. Virginia, here I come...

Oh, and happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] laraemily, one of the most fun, creative people on LJ. Yay!
chestnutcurls: (rose)
Here are some of my pictures from Emily's wedding! Evan took most of the ceremony ones, so send any compliments or complaints his way. :)

Last night Evan and I hung out with Casey and had a great time. As it sinks in more and more that we're really getting married, I worry more and more about finances. As usual, Casey had wise words to say on that topic. She reminded me that we'll be taking vows for richer or poorer, and that's a sign that money will always be an issue. If we had a lot of money, we'd still be struggling about how to spend it wisely. What's important is the marriage. I really needed to hear that. Also, after talking with her, we decided to scale down our honeymoon. We've really wanted to go to Hawaii, but with the rates I'm looking at, it would cost me half my savings. So we're reorganizing our priorities in order to afford more important things (more on that tomorrow!) and will probably just drive down to the Gulf Coast or something. I feel relieved now that we've made that decision.

Today I'm leaving work early and we're going with my parents to check out a nearby country club. My dad has heard nothing but good things about it. If all goes well, we'll go ahead and book it for the reception. We don't have time for hall-shopping or lists of pros and cons. :P I'm so thankful for my parents; they're being very generous. I am also thankful to the authors of Bridal Bargains, from whom I have already learned a lot.

I am still completely undecided on bridesmaid colors and flowers.

I finally got this best friend generator to work! )

Oh, and happy birthday Jeremy! :D And happy fiscal new year to everyone else. Especially the accountants.
chestnutcurls: (hermanas)
I miss helenangelHelen, because she'd also find our new receptionist situation at work annoying. Our nice receptionists were removed from the entrances about a month ago and moved to building C, where they just field calls. Instead of Lois, who was always sweet and pleasant to talk to, there's a professional security guard in a suit sitting at the front desk every day. He's nice enough, but twice a day he demands to see my name badge. (I should point out that our badges also serve as keys, meaning you can't open the door without one.) It's gotten kind of ridiculous, to the point that he calls people by name and asks to see their badges. The only way to placate him is to keep my badge clipped to the outside of my purse at all times, which is 1) unsafe when I'm out in public and 2) increasing the chances of losing my badge, in which case I will probably never get into the office again. :P

Now that I've vented about that, I'm ready to share the official Wedding Lineup! Blathering - here's a cut for the uninterested. )

Gosh, I could go on for quite a while about other wedding things, but how much can you guys take? Plus, I probably ought to find work to do. I already feel bad about my wedding fixation during work hours.
chestnutcurls: (bridesmaids)
Thanks so much, everyone, for your well wishes. Every one of your comments means a lot to me...and to Evan too. We sat down Saturday night and read them all together. :) Your happiness makes me happy too! Yay!

Unfortunately I don't have time to say much right now because we are trying to get a location locked down by the end of the week. We've officially set the date for November 27...now less than five months away. I mean, how bizarre is this whole thing? On Thursday I was just regular old Brenda, contentedly plugging along, thinking about redecorating my apartment. Four days later I'm getting references for reception sites, making rush appointments at David's Bridal, and planning a life with the man I love. I feel like I've been dropped into an alternate dimension. The best news of the day is that my church is not nearly as expensive for weddings as I was told. In fact, it's cheaper than other places my parents were considering. So my dad told me to go ahead and book it! I'm so surprised and glad that we can get married in our own church. (See, I just had that weird feeling again. We? Getting married? Huh? :)) God is really bringing this together, even in the small things.

Emily's wedding was beautiful and went completely smoothly. She was the prettiest bride I've ever seen. Obviously, I have more to say about it but can't get into it right now. :) Sorry for all the incessant wedding talk...I promise I'll calm down after this week. Also, I haven't had time to look at my friends page at all. Thanks for bearing with me, and rejoicing with me!
