I had an entry written earlier, but I just hit "Delete draft" by mistake. The only important thing in it was me wishing jmcphersJonathan a happy birthday. I pray this will be a good year for you. :)

The weather here is horrible for late October. It's still in the 80s, and so humid there's no point in trying to make my hair look good. The air conditioner is still on at home. Sometimes I wish I lived a little further north where there are actual seasons. Okay, we have seasons, but they don't come at the appropriate times. Summer hangs on for at least six months of the year. Evan explained to me that in Chicago (where he comes from) it's that way with winter. If I had to decide, I'd probably stick with the longer summer. Cold makes me weary after a while.

Last night I pulled out an old exercise video, the Cosmopolitan Fat Burning Workout. It has five aerobic sections alternating with five handweight sections, and it's pretty brutal. To my own surprise, I got through it okay (something I couldn't always do at the height of my exercising discipline). It says you'll see results if you do it three times a week, so I may stick with this one and try to do it that often. It might be more effective than intending to aerobicize every day and managing it maybe twice a week. I've given up on being an Exercise Nazi - I just do what I can now. There are too many other things in life.

One of my co-workers, the really domestic one, brought an amazing pumpkin dish today. Not a pumpkin pie, but sort of casserole-ish. I refuse to see it as canceling out my exercise, because pumpkin is extremely good for you. Really! I want to go pick out a pumpkin with Evan and do the whole pumpkin thing - roast the seeds, make a pie, carve the shell. We may not have time before Halloween, though. Is it still okay to do pumpkin things after Halloween? :)

I finally heard a Joss Stone song this morning. The press is right. She rocks! Oh, and I'm warming up to Keane, too. Their CD is really cheap at Target right now, and I almost bought it. I have to save up for U2, though.

I am so, so tired. I can't remember the last time I was in bed before 11:00, and it's finally caught up with me. The 98-degree heat is probably a factor, too. Whatever the cause, the days are starting to run together with an exhaustion I haven't felt since my senior year band camp. I haven't exercised (other than Pilates, which I no longer consider exercise) since Saturday. I mean, it's bad enough that I'm not on a Bridal Diet Plan (since that's apparently what all engaged women are supposed to do :P), but I can't even find time or energy for a ten-minute workout. The irony is, I'd probably feel better after exercising. Sigh.

Debs spent the night last night, so I was up with her until past midnight. She came across my Personality Plus book and wanted to take the test- she's a Sanguine/Choleric, which is exactly what I expected. I'm a Melancholy/Phlegmatic, so we're total opposites. We both tested zero in each other's categories. :) That's still my favorite personality-theory book. It becomes really easy to identify people once you've read it.

Oh, and if you need summery clothes and have an Old Navy in your area, GO. The clearance is even more insane than I thought. They have sleepshorts for a dollar, little layering tank tops for $3, racerback exercise tanks for $5, etc. I ended up with a stuffed bag of clothes for a total of $50 (and one regular-price shirt was included in that). Insane. I'm thinking of checking out another Old Navy this weekend to see if they have more tank tops in my size...my store was pretty combed over.

Hey Shana and Phillip, do you guys have a wedding cake topper yet? :D

This could be fun: Part of being on Livejournal.com is inevitably gaining a number of LJ buddies. Unfortunately, as time wears on, it's easy to forget where all of them came from. Post this in your journal and have your friends respond with how they recall first 'meeting' you.

Randomness:

For about a week, Kathy and I have been doing the Crunch Cardio Salsa workout. I highly recommend it- it's the best aerobic video I've found since the 29 Minute Workout. The instructor is really nice, and her personality and looks remind me a lot of dorkiness_haloNicole. :)

Last night Kathy and I had a great girls night. We went shopping for all kinds of girly things, then came home and salsa-ed. She'll start moving some things this weekend, so I'm planning on buying my entertainment center! I found one I liked at Wal-Mart, and it costs less than the one I was looking at before. It has glass shelves on either side of the TV area. Anyway, it'll help to space out the big purchases a little. In addition to the entertainment center I'm getting a new TV (the living room one is Kathy's), and a futon to make Kathy's room into a guest room. Debra's already referring to it as "her" futon and demanding that I get it immediately. :P :)

Danielle had mentioned that Star Jones of The View is getting married, and taking a lot of flak for proceeding with it in a Christian way (i.e. waiting until marriage, and taking her husband's name). I just came across her wedding website and it's really cute. Props to Star for standing her ground!

I just started A Severe Mercy by Sheldon Vanauken and it's already mesmerizing. It was hard to tear myself away from it at lunchtime. Expect more thoughts on it once I'm done.

Happy 19th birthday to my sister Debra, the best hermana a girl could ask for! The guys and I are taking her to Chili's tonight to celebrate. She's almost done with teenagerhood...it's scary. Wasn't I just nineteen?

Attention fellow Potterheads, and people who enjoy good web design: J.K. Rowling has relaunched her website. She wrote all the content herself, and there's some very interesting stuff! Check it out if you haven't already.

Lately I feel like the only person in the world who's not on a strict diet or exercise regimen. Kathy has begun a Pre-Wedding Exercise Plan that puts me to shame. I'll benefit from it, though, since I'll exercise with her when I have time. Last night we reinstated the infamous LuAnn workout tape that we used to do religiously in college (we even have video of us and Emily exercising to it). It was rough. Even Pilates has been difficult and painful for me the last couple of weeks. I haven't done anything differently, so I don't know what's wrong. Anyway, the topic of weight keeps coming up with all my friends, and I've been thinking it's such a relative thing. Everyone is healthy at different weights. I shouldn't let myself feel like a cow for not conforming to other people's standards. So my new diet-type motto is: Know thyself. The end. :)

Evan came over last night even though it was Monday, which is traditionally our day apart. I felt like I should tell him not to come, but I had missed him all day and my resolve was weak. :) He brought a book, I took out my current book, and we read in happy silence. Our shared love of reading is one of the things I like most about our relationship. I never thought I'd get to be with a guy who was as much of a bookworm as I am. I didn't know such guys existed. :) Right now I have too many books on my plate, mostly due to over-zealousness at the library. Alli loaned me the second and third Shopaholic books, which she'll want back soon. I need to get cracking.

New icon. One of several.

It is finished! The file room project, that is. I just printed off the last sheet of tags for the file drawers. My co-workers will not be told about this, lest I get slapped immediately with some other two-month-long project. I need a little time to enjoy the accomplishment. :) All this peon labor has not been in vain. Earlier I was thinking that I know that file room better than anyone else here, because I personally moved, identified, boxed, and labeled all 1000+ of the files. I have a right to decide how things should go in there, because I made it. Then it hit me, isn't that like God? He made me, and He's the one who should decide how my life goes, because He knows me. I love cheesy file-room sermon illustrations. :)

Today must be a day of revelations, because I had another one about friendship. I realized that for a close friendship to really work, both people should need each other. Not in a creepy codependent way- in a normal way, like wanting each other's company and valuing each other's opinion. When one friend never sees another and doesn't feel a loss, I'm not sure how real their friendship is. Maybe this is obvious to most people...it's new to me. I see that the friends I spend the most time with, now, make me feel good and valued. They make time for me and seek out my thoughts on various things. When I get upset, they comfort me and don't think I'm dumb. That's what friendship is. I'm blessed to have such people in my life, both in real life and here on LJ. Thanks. :)

Tuesday has become my favorite weekday, other than Friday. I can look forward to McAlisting with Ryan, and then Evan comes over and we all watch American Idol together. I usually do some scrapbooking, too, until Ryan leaves. I like my little routines. :) A routine becomes a rut only when you don't want to do it anymore.

I'm feeling good about my weight situation, for once. I recently weighed myself and have lost those stubborn few pounds. Though I have done my best to gain it back since, :P I think I'm okay since I'm exercising more. Debra has my beloved 29 Minute Workout tape, so I ordered another one for myself and did it last night, for the first time in about a year. It's a lot easier than before. I'm definitely more flexible now, and the formerly torturous ab section hardly fazed me. Yay for Pilates! (I highly recommend the 29 Minute Workout. If you can get past the hilarious 80s outfits and music, it's excellent and works all your muscle groups.)

Okay, now I have to do work.

Today is my brother's sixteenth birthday. Why don't guys get Sweet Sixteen parties? It seems unfair. You could change it and make it Slammin' Sixteen or something. Anyway, it's hard to believe that in a couple of years he'll be an adult. To me he will always be little Kev-Kev. :) My parents are taking him to dinner tonight, but I can't go because of tutoring. Evan and I will go to the house later and have cake with them. Also, in all the birthday and Valentine's excitement, I almost forgot that today is our five-monthiversary. :D

[livejournal.com profile] steveisright asked for my thoughts on Robert Jordan and the Wheel of Time books. My general opinion is that you shouldn't start reading them unless you have a lot of time. They're enjoyable, but Jordan has two main flaws. One: too many characters. I know a twelve-book epic requires many people, but there are limits. He spends tons of time describing random barmaids whom you will never see again (except maybe briefly, five books later, after you've forgotten them). Two: unnecessary rambling. He re-summarizes major plot points every two pages. To put this in perspective for the girls: remember in the Baby-Sitters Club, how every book had a long, boring chapter with restated fun facts about each of the Baby-Sitters? Now imagine a book where that's going on constantly. Yeah. Bottom line, the plot is interesting, and you'll pick up a lot of fun catchphrases like "May you always find water and shade." But I'm not sure it's worth the trouble.

Kathy and I had an interesting conversation about therapy the other day. Apparently studies have shown that the healing factor of therapy is that people just need someone to listen to them, without motives or judgment. So people who benefit most from it are people who can't find that support in their own families or social groups. I thought that was really interesting. When you look at it that way, LJ is sort of like self-therapy. :) It wasn't so long ago that I was in a situation like that, so it makes a lot of sense to me. Thankfully things are all-around better now.

Hey, I'm sure you're all wondering what came of my brief flirtation with French Riviera Spa. On Robin's good advice, I decided to check out the YMCA instead. But it's $35/month and there's a $90 joining fee. Sadly, I do not have that kind of money. So I will continue doing aerobics tapes once a week and hoping for the best. :P On a related note, Pilates is now making my stomach bigger. It's solid muscle, but it's definitely not flat and nice. I don't think this is what's supposed to happen. I'm sure you really wanted to know about that.

I'm back at work! I think every weekend should be a three-day weekend. I cleaned and did laundry yesterday, so I can actually have evening activities this week. It snowed for half an hour yesterday morning, which was fun and pretty to watch. I had planned to go for a walk, but with the snow and wind chill of 10, I decided to do an exercise tape instead. This proved to be a bad move. I was wearing socks because of the cold, and while doing a triple-step to the side, my legs flew out from under me. I twisted something in my foot on the way down. It's too bad I was alone, because I'm sure it would have been hilarious to see. The pain, however, was not hilarious. After writhing on the floor for a while, I called Evan for his advice on what to do- I felt like something must be broken. Thankfully I was able to move my toes, so we decided I was okay. Today it hurts less, but I don't think I'll be wearing heels this week. :P

Evan and I had a disagreement about the vast number of pillows on my bed and my fanaticism about the way they are arranged. To my own surprise, I heard myself giving a whole speech on proper pillow placement and usage. It was like the Friends episode where they figured out that Monica had eleven categories for towels. I'm scared of myself now. Anyway, I realized that we on LJ have never addressed this relevant and important topic, so here you go: The Pillow Poll. )

I am in pain, and this exercise video is to blame. I've had the video for a long time, but I've only done the second workout because the first was too hard. Well, on Sunday night I got ambitious and tackled the first one. I will never make that mistake again. The next morning, I could hardly walk. Today, despite the stretches Kathy made me do, isn't much better. Getting Up and Sitting Down are currently very difficult. I just hope I'm better by Saturday, when I will accompany my mom and my visiting grandfather and great-aunt to Murfreesboro for Contest of Champions.

In cat news, the vet has recommended we wait another week before bringing Gandalf home. I feel guilty about taking him from his mother, and Kathy is trying to convince me that cats are not familial and he probably won't be upset. Still, I keep thinking of sad animal-separation stories such as An American Tail. I am a sappy cheeseball. (Further proof: I absolutely love Kelly Clarkson's A Moment Like This.)

Have I mentioned that R.C. Sproul is coming to town? He'll be speaking at IPC next Sunday! But as I said, I will be gone this weekend. It might be possible for me to make the Sunday evening service, but my mother wants to show my relatives around Nashville on Sunday, and I doubt she'd be willing to come back earlier for me. Over the years, she's often gotten mad at me for missing family things because of church and RUF things. I don't think I could make her understand what a big deal R.C. Sproul is, so I just have to deal with it. I can always get the tapes, I guess.

Did anyone watch CSI Miami last night? It was a very pro-life episode. I was impressed.

This is very cool.

I have actually been busy today! We also had a department lunch at Houston's, which was fun and helped to kill some time. :)

I don't think I have mentioned that Kathy and I have started exercising. I like to take walks, but I've had to stop because it's way too hot. Around the time I quit walking, Kathy decided she wanted to lose some weight (she weighs about 10 pounds, so I don't know where she's going to lose it from), and we should start doing the exercise tapes that we used to do when we were in school. I couldn't find the one we used to do (a Cosmopolitan aerobic workout with an evil instructor named LouAnne), so we've been doing a dance tape. However, it hasn't taken us long to get sick of it. So last night I pulled out a 29-Minute Workout that my mom got in the '80s. And boy, is it funny. Everyone on the tape is wearing those horrible '80s spandex catsuits with the underwear-looking things over them. (It reminds me of the Great Shape Barbie I used to have.) But once we got past the outfits and the Miami Vice-esque music, it's actually a pretty good workout. We felt very Hans-and-Franz when we were done. :)

I like exercise because it makes me more thankful for my health. I am glad I can move and wave my arms and chasse and annoy my first-floor neighbor. :) I love dancing. I was in ballet for six years, but I dropped out because I couldn't do a split and thus could not move on to the next level. I have no flexibility in that behind-the-knee area. At the end of our ballet video, there's a stretch where you're sitting on the floor, and you're supposed to lean forward and grab your ankle. Kathy and I can barely grab our knees. It's pretty sad. :)

Here's something really funny I saw at Amy's blog. I can attest from experience that these classes are needed (especially Topics 7 and 10), but please don't be offended, guys. :)
